On 8th September 1964, Miguel FitzGerald took off from Río Gallegos in LV-HUA on a daring but unauthorised flight to the Falkland Islands. After a three hour flight, he landed in a field at Port Stanley, hung the Argentine flag on a nearby fence, gave a proclamation claiming Argentine sovereignty over the Malvinas to a bemused local and took off again to return to the mainland. Although initially sanctioned by the Air Force for making the unauthorised flight, he was welcomed back as a hero and the sanctions were rescinded. Later used by a skydiving club and acquired for the museum in 2014. This photo is copyright © Tim Spearman, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
