RAF Leuchars Fire Section out in full force dealing with a Cessna 172 which made a controlled crash landing on to Leuchars main runway after its nosewheel became detached after a heavy landing and subsequent go-around at Montrose Aerodrome. The aircraft declared an emergency and as Leuchars was the nearest airfield with sufficient fire cover (RAF Leuchars at the time was a Master Emergency Diversion Airfield), the station was chosen to carry out the nosewheel-less landing.
