Photo taken during Operation Plumbbob, which was a series of 29 open air and underground nuclear explosions on the Nevada Test Range from May to October 1957. An F-89J fired a Genie nuclear air-to-air missile as one of tests made famous because five USAF officers and a cinematographer stood under the blast to test the effect on civilians. All survived and would live a further 33 years or more. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland This photo was added on 25 December 2022, and has since been viewed 598 times. |
