From 1973 to 1983 Greenham Common was the home to the International Air Tattoo. With nuclear cruise missiles based there it was also the scene of protest and a 19 year continuous peace camp. The base closed in 1992. The cruise missile bunkers can still be seen here. The hangar area is now an industrial estate and whilst the remnants of the runway are still visible the bulk of the airfield is now a thriving nature reserve.
