The utility helicopter LZ-5 utilised Doman's unorthodox gimbal mounted, rotor head system with no need for flap and drag hinges dampers. The type did not go into production and only three prototypes were built, the first two of which were purchased by the US Army, as the YH-31, but ultimately rejected as the rotor system was deemed too complex for practical field repair. The third prototype flew extensively in Canada as CF-IBG and in the US, France (Paris Air Show in 1960) and Italy with the registration N812, and is now on display at this super museum.

The S.3 Springbok reconnaissance aircraft of 1923 was advanced in having a monocoque metal fuselage and initally an all-metal wing. Of the five Springboks built, one S.3a Springbok II became the S.3b Chamois, fitted with a more powerful, 450-hp Bristol Jupiter engine. The first flight was from Lympne on 14 March 1927 because there was no land airfield near Rochester at the time. In April J7295 was flown to Martlesham Heath for testing. On 2 July it showed up at the RAF Display at Hendon. The Chamois remained at Martlesham until November but the test results were unfavourable and it seems to have been scrapped soon thereafter. The twin-engined H-24 of 1929 led to the H-241 powered by four Hispano-Suiza 9 inline engines, followed by the H-242 with Gnome-Rhône 7Kd Titan Major radials. Accommodation was for twelve passengers. The H-242/1 entered service with Air France on the Marseille to Algiers route in 1935, making possible travel between Paris and Algiers in nine hours in summer. Another route was Marseille to Tunis via Ajaccio. F-ANPB struck the breakwater at Marseille - Marignane in fog on 2 February 1938 and was a write-off. Photo by: E Michaud

The Wibault 72 was a military aircraft from the interwar period, designed by the Michel Wibault aircraft company, and which served as a single-seat fighter aircraft in the French Air Force. It was a "parasol" wing monoplane and entirely made of metal. 69 units were built for the French Air Force. In 1932 in particular, it equipped 4 squadrons of the 7th Wing based in Dijon. This one depicted in the pic is seen seriously damaged. Photo from A.Littolff family album and published with her permission.

The first company called Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW) existed until 1922 and became BMW. The second BFW was a continuation of Udet Flugzeugbau, and became Messserschmitt. Its first new product was the sole BFW 1 Sperber, a development of the wooden Udet U-12 Flamingo with a steel tube fuselage frame and N-type struts. It first flew in the autumn of 1927 and was sold to aerobatic pilot Alexander von Bismarck in February 1928. From 1929 it was owned by another aristocratic aerobatic pilot, Prince Eugen of Schaumburg-Lippe, and also flown by Oskar Dimphel.

The RWD-6 was designed for the 1932 Challenge International de Tourisme. SP-AHL took ninth place. Of the other two examples built, SP-AHM had crashed during a test flight. SP-AHN won the Challenge, but fatally crashed two weeks later. SP-AHL was then strengthened as the RWD-6bis, with the single wing struts replaced by V struts, as seen here. Note the Mickey Mouse artwork on the tailfin. During 1934 the aircraft was scrapped and parts were used in the RWD-13 prototype. RWD were based near Okęcie airport, apparently across a railway line. The large airport building included a military headquarters and a water tower. Photo from: Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe

Björn Andreasson constructed and built the BA-7 during free time, when he was employed by Convair in the US in the 1950s. In early 1961 did her return home to Sweden and started working with Malmö Flygindusti, MFI. He brought the aircraft with him and it became SE-COW. The BA-7 was modified to a new version; the MFI-9 Junior.

The Ca.87 Polonia was a Ca.73ter (or Ca.82) bomber donated to Poland by Caproni and rebuilt for a transatlantic flight. It got four engines and it was made more floatable. Following its first flight on 15 June 1929, it was flown from Italy to Ireland, but there were engine problems and the transatlantic flight never happened. The aircraft was returned to Caproni. This photo was printed in Milan, but we're not sure if this is Caproni's Taliedo plant or the Vizzola factory, now the Volandia museum. Photo from: Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe

'Pilot Lt G Stefanesco in the Nieuport Delage-NiD.72C1' during the 'Little Entente and Poland air rally'. Three examples of the French NiD.72 fighter were delivered to Belgium, four to Brazil and three, apparently, to Romania. Note construction number 1 - this would be the first production aircraft. C1 just stood for single-seat fighter. The Little Entente was a military alliance between Czechoslovakia, Romania and Yugoslavia. Photo from: Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe

Oeffag (Oesterreichische Flugzeugfabrik AG) delivered 32 C.II aircraft, serialled 52.01 through 52.32, to the Austro-Hungarian army air force in 1916. A second series of 32 somewhat improved aircraft, 52.50 through 52.81, followed from February 1917, but the C.II had numerous deficiencies and began to be withdrawn from the front in the summer of 1917, to be used for training. Better known for producing Albatros fighters, the Oeffag factory was located here at Wiener Strasse airfield, now LOAN. Today Diamond builds aircraft here. Photo from: Fortepan

Two-seat racer designed for the October 1934 London - Melbourne race, to be flown by Francis Lombardi and Vittori Suster. Registered I-TALY in September 1934 with race number 69, it apparently still had not flown by then, and failed to make it to the start at Mildenhall. Reportedly the PL.3 was scrapped after some test flights by the military. CAB stood for Cantieri Aeronautici Bergamaschi. From 1929, this manufacturer from Bergamo was a subsidiary of Caproni and from 1938, the abbreviation stood for Caproni Aeronautica Bergamasca. Photo from: Dan Shumaker collection
