Seen during a ramp tour at Luke AFB. Owned by the WGAF these F-104's were operated by the 69th TFTS - 58th TFTW of the USAF. German F-104 training was done in Arizona where the weather was so much better than in Western Europe. This aircraft was built by Lockheed in 1961. Carried WGAF serials KF+102, DA+321, BG+122 and 20+21. Transferred to the USAF as 63-13243 in 1963. In 1982 the aircraft starred in the movie 'The Right Stuff'. Sold to the USAF on 19 Jul 1983. Later transferred to the Republic of China Air Force as 4368. Crashed in a fatal accident on 24 Mar 1990 in a collision with 4385.

This aircraft is seen here at the Target Towing Flight at Leeuwarden Air Force Base. It had been phased out for operational use (replaced by the F-16A) and served a while as target towing aircraft with some more phased out aircraft. Later it was transferred (MAP) to Turkey, delivered on January 19th, 1982.

Slide is part of my private collection. Picture was taken by Marinus Dirk Tabak. On November 21st, 1978, while landing together with collegue D-8098 at Wildenrath AB in Germany, this Starfighter collided with its forward cockpit section into the aft section of F-104G D-8098. The pilot of the D-8341 was tragically killed by this collision. It happened during a squadron exchange with RAF 19 Squadron at Wildenrath. The aircraft was declared written off and modified into a towing instruction airframe at Volkel Air Base.
