Air Express DC-4s VH-EDA and EDB were sold in 1980 to Basler in the US as N5581S and N5581T respectively. However in a painting mix-up at Essendon the registrations were painted on the wrong aircraft. The error was corrected after arrival Oshkosh. EDA and EDB differed in detail. The former was a DC-4 and had a small porthole window behind the cockpit on the port side. EDB, a C-54, did not have this window. Mike Madden photo.

Behind the Netherlands Government Air Transport C-54 is PK-DSC, one of four Skymasters delivered to the Netherlands Indies air force in 1946. Given civil registrations, they were briefly used by the resurrected KNILM airline for a Batavia (Jakarta) - Los Angeles service through Biak, Kwajalein and Honolulu - total flying time, almost 50 hours! NL-305 and PK-DSC to KLM in August 1947 as PH-TAG and TSC, respectively. We think the photo must have been taken at Kemayoran and the hedges do show in some other pictures. Wenela Air Services started life as Africair and was set up to transport migrant mine workers to the gold mines of the (then) Transvaal in South Africa. WNLA (pronounced Wenela) was the Witwatersrand Native Labour Association. The airline operated from 1952 to the mid 1970s.

Airlines in Botswana is an interesting story. Bechuanaland National Airways existed between 1965 and 1966 before going out of business. Then in 1966 Botswana National Airways entered the stage. However, they lasted only three years. In 1970 and 1971 it was Botswana Airways. Since 1972 it has been Air Botswana. VQ-ZEG is seen here at Lusaka in June of 1968 having been delivered in January. It was reregistered A2-ZEQ in June/July of that year.

Skymasters acquired by KLM in 1945 received semi-military markings with orange triangle insignia as civil operation was still difficult on the route to the Far East. They were already inscribed in the civil register. NL-309, ex 42-107445, was PH-TAK but the civil mark was probably never applied as the aircraft was sold as G-AJPL in June 1947.
