28 DC-3Ds were built after WWII using surplus parts. The quarters of the Sabena flag were blue, black, yellow and red, the blue top quarter with a yellow star referring to the Belgian Congo colony - see the later photo of this airframe as 9O-CUN of Air Congo. The design of the Sabena flag is supposed to have inspired the flag of Burundi. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

It arrived at Antwerp Airport (Belgium) at the end of Apr 1974 in Hilair livery, after being acquired by Delta Air Transport (possibly as a source for spares). The following month it was damaged in a ground collision when it was hit by an SIAI Marchetti SF.260. At some point it was transported to a children's play area at Bokrijk, Genk, Belgium. Since broken up. Looking at the kids' antics, Health and Safety was obviously not an issue in those days!

One of 28 new DC-3s built from parts after the war. This aircraft was apparently not taken up by Pacific Northern Airlines and served Aer Lingus from 1946 to 1964. Based on the livery and aircraft name, it should be possible to narrow down the date range. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

On lease to Lesotho Airways from Comair. ZS-FRM first flew in 1946 and was built uncompleted C-117 parts. She joined Det Danske Luftfartsselskab as OY-DCU and was named "Ulf Viking", a name she continued to carry when DDL became a constituent member of SAS. She went to Linjeflyg as SE-CFU and later Austrian as OE-LBN. Moving to South Africa, she joined Comair's fleet in 1968. She ended her life in Africa serving in Zimbabwe as Z-WRU and later Kenya as 5Y-BIL. In the late 1990s she was damaged in Nairobi and written off.

A frequent visitor to Baton Rouge back in the late 1960s. I think it had one of the nicest civilian paint schemes that I had seen for a DC-3.

A pair of Comair DC-3s at Skukuza in January 1987. The Dakota in the background is ZS-DRJ.
