Was meant to become VH-CAT with the Department of Civil Aviation but registration not taken up. Planned sale in the UK in 1959 as G-APPP did not go ahead and VH-BMU remained in Australia. In 1964 it was sold to New Hebrides Airways (Vanuatu) as VQ-FAD. Reregistered VP-FAD in 1966 and crashed Tanna Island on October 21 that year. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

TAA is cited as the source of this photo and the year 1952. VH-DRE was delivered in April 1952 with variable-pitch de Havilland propellers. After three incidents of prop blades failing, one fatal, Drovers were grounded in September 1952. They were fitted fixed-pitch Fairey-Reed props, as seen in the photo, and new load charts were issued in December 1952 to allow operations to recommence. The photo location is not 100% certain but appears to be the eastern side of Mascot (now Sydney Kingsford Smith) airport near the TAA maintenance hangars.

VQ-FAS was acquired by New Hebrides Airways from Fiji Airways in 1961, initially as a lease-purchase. This photo is believed to be taken at Suva before the aircraft left for Port Vila. VQ-FAR in the background remained with Fiji Airways. -FAS was reregistered VP-PAC in 1966 but by then it was already being dismantled for spares having run out of hours in August 1965. VH-DRD crashed at Mooraberrie Station on January 11, 1952. It was stripped of useful parts and abandoned. The fuselage was taken to the homestead at the north side of the airfield and used as a chicken house. In 1980 the remains of -DRD were recovered to Mt Isa where they and parts from other aircraft were restored as a memorial for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Removing the fuselage from Mooraberrie required some caution as the world's deadliest land snake, the inland taipan, would have found it a happy hunting ground for mice and rats.

Qantas photo of its new Drover VH-EBR. Qantas operated it in Papua New Guinea until 1954 when it was sold to Fiji Airways as VQ-FAO. The crossed UK and French flags represent the unique status of New Hebrides as a jointly ruled Anglo-French condominium that finally ended on independence in 1980 and the birth of Vanuatu. With no New Hebrides register, the Drover initially carried Fijian registration. In June 1966 -FED became VP-PAD when New Hebrides got its own block within the British Colonial system. It crashed at Tannu Island on October 22, 1966 with the loss of eight lives.

VH-AZN crashed on Austral Downs Station on April 26, 1957. Useful parts were removed soon after. The airframe remained where in came down until 1979 when it was recovered to Mount Isa. Parts were used in the restoration of Drover VH-DRD as a memorial to the flying doctor service. Photo from the Ben Dannecker Collection.
