A re-enactment of the start of the MacRobertson Air Race from England to Australia in 1934 took place at Midenhall. Although a grass strip was prepared this became unusable due to cross winds and a taxiway where aircraft had been parked became a short temporary runway. Many hands were needed to remove the parked aircraft and the visitors were moved away so this temporary 'runway' could be used.

VH-AXL was fitted with two small porthole windows either side of the cabin when delivered to QEA. It had been an ambulance aircraft with the RAAF and was sold to the Flying Doctor Service. AXL was operated by Connellan Airways with these portholes but it is not known if they were installed by the RAAF or by Connellan postwar. Qantas refitted the standard DH84 glasshouse and sent the aircraft to Papua New Guinea. It crashed there at Karanka on September 21, 1951. Note the Qantas hangar still has its wartime camouflage. Carpenter's Dragon VH-URW failed to out climb the terrain after an attempted go-around, crashing into Little Wau Creek at the top of the Wau aerodrome. Sadly the pilot and a passenger were killed. However, the aircraft was sold to Parer's Air Transport and rebuilt, only to be destroyed by a Japanese attack in 1942. (CAHS/Len Dobbin collection)
