The photographer framed the Pinwheel helicopter (see photo 678360) with this S-51 of the US Forest Service. Other shots show the reg clearly as N155Z but it's not listed by the FAA or anywhere else. From 1960 N155Z was worn by a C-46 Commando that the FAA has also forgotten about. Photo by: Ralph Crane / Life

A very interesting photo as Skyway from Providence, Massachusetts, operated the world's first helicopter passenger service apparently between Logan airport and this garage rooftop in central Boston. A trial flight was made on 16 April 1947 and commercial runs started within days, but were suspended after four months. NC92809 was reportedly the company's sole helicopter. It went to the US Coast Guard as 230, one of four S-51s returned to the manufacturer after commercial failures and sold to the USCG as HO3S-1G Dragonflies. Two of the earliest S-51s were acquired by the French navy in 1951 and 1952, receiving serials AR.1 (c/n 5102) and AR.2 (c/n 5106). AR.1 was damaged in Djibouti on 7 September 1951 while presumably on its way to Indochina with the aircraft carrier Arromanches. AR.2 did make it to Indochina later. Both helicopters withdrawn from use at Saint-Raphaël, France in March 1955.

The Dragonfly was the RCAF's first helicopter and 9601 was the first of seven taken on by the service. It was originally assigned in 1947 to Trenton for training duties, then to Edmonton, also for training and next to the Canadian Joint Air Training School at Rivers, Manitoba. Transferred to Cold Lake, Alberta, it flew for the Experimental and Proving Establishment for five years. After that, it was sent to Chatham, New Brunswick, for five more years. In 1965 it was retired and found its way into the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa, moving to NAFMC in 2012.
