H5240 was supplied to New Zealand as part of the post World War I Imperial Gift to help set up an air arm. Instead, it passed to Walsh Bros, trading New Zealand Flying School. H5240 was registered G-NZAB in 1922 but never carried the civil registration. In 1924 the school and aircraft were taken over by the new New Zealand Permanent Air Force. H5240 crashed at Waihi on May 26 that year. Longlands was Hastings's first aerodrome on land leased by Walsh Bros. It was replaced by the current Bridge Pa aerodrome (NZHS) in 1934. Relations between Belgium and Holland were not without issues after WWI and this Belgian visit to Soesterberg was an official affair, led by Lt Gen Gillieaux. The Dutch army air force commander, Maj Van Santen, must have felt outgunned! According to Dutch newspaper reports, five Avro 504Ns from the flying school at Wevelgem were involved, and X-12 wears the school's familiar pinguin emblem. The aircraft type designator X was only worn underwing. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie
