ex 51-1748, but no serial carried

Aircraft located on a stick right next to the southbound lanes of US Highway 17. Over the years I've passed by this location a number of times but this is the first time I've seen it.

Ex 53-6582 with the USAF. To the RNLAF in May 1956 as P-229. To the miners and sappers school at Reek in 1979. By now apparently carrying fake identity P-312.

F-84Gs 51-769, 51-1225, 51-1694 and 51-1867 received an E for Exempt prefix for ZELMAL (Zero-length Launch, Mat Landing) V/STOL trials. A big rocket blasted the Thunderjet into the sky and the pilot was supposed to land, gear up, on an inflatable mat, using an arresting cable. 51-1225 was damaged beyond repair in the first mat landing at Edwards on 2 June 1954. One of the early jets saved by Ed Maloney's Planes of Fame Museum. Pictured on display before restored in 14th Fighter group markings from it's Air Force service circa 1948. The fighter was later moved to the Museum's second location in Vale, AZ.

On display in the Cold War Gallery at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. This SAC Thunderflash of the 91st SRS, 71st SRW(F) based at Larson AFB in 1956 is one of 25 that were modified as parasite aircraft to hook up with ten GRB-36 FIghter CONveyers (FICON), which were modified strategic bombers. The concept was to carry the fighter or recce aircraft near the target, drop and recover the same so that the range of the fighter could be extended at a time when aerial refuelling was unproven. Separating and hooking back was hazardous.
