The original single-engined Ju 52 was tried as a torpedo bomber! This military version was designated K45 by Junkers. The fourth Ju 52 airframe, D-2317, was sent to Swedish subsidiary Flygindustri for trials which took place at Horten in Norway. SE-ADM then to D-2317 again and D-UBES. The man blocking the registration might be carrying the squadron pet on his shoulder but it is probably D-AKLQ, not AKLO. Both D-AKLQ and D-VDZA (c/n 5637 or 5837) served as ambulance aircraft with Sanitätsflugbereitschaft 7 in Greece during the war, though the photo may have been taken earlier. D-AKLO is also said to have existed but no details are given. D-AKLQ was rebuilt after a crash in 1935 and its c/n is also reported as 5171. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Powered by Jumo diesel engines. Briefly used by Lufthansa in 1935, then to DVS school. Supposedly sold to Syndicato Condor, but aircraft was in Germany in 1944. Junkers claimed the diesels reduced hourly fuel consumption from 700 lb to 440 lb. However, the empty weight of the aircraft was no less than 789 kg (1739 lb) higher. The floats fitted here added another 544 kg (1200 lb). Also seen here at the 1934 Paris Air Show are Fieseler Fi 97 D-IPUS and Hawker 'Indermediate' Fury G-ABSE. Photo from: Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe

This CASA 352 was originally with the Ejercito del Aire (EdA). In May 1976, it landed at Düsseldorf (DUS) and spent the next 14 years on the visitor's terrace of Pier B as D-CIAK. In 1991 it was lifted off the terrace and the following year transported to Switzerland for evaluating the possibility of a return to airworthiness. Restoration followed (primarily at Manching) and from 1997 to 2016 the plane was based at from Mönchengladbach (MGL) and flew, as HB-HOY, 7236 hours and 57 minutes and made 7688 landings. The plane now has a great home at MGL to spend her retirement years.

Flight deck view of D-CDLH showing the relatively modern instrumentation of this old lady. The original D-AQUI was built for Lufthansa at Dessau. First flown on April 6, 1936, it was delivered our days later use on the Copenhagen-Gothenburg-Oslo coastal route. July 1 that year, it passed on to Det norske Luftfartsselskap as LN-DAH. After serving with Lufthansa during WW2, it was returned to DNL after a post-war rebuild as LN-KAF and joined SAS' fleet when that airline was established in 1946 serving there the next ten years,

This Tante Ju was built in 1939 and TOC with the Swiss AF A-703. In October 1982 it was registered HB-HOP and then spent the next years operating pleasure flights for Ju-Air. After the tragic crash of sister-ship HB-HOT in 2018 the operating and maintenance licences were revoked for other Swiss-based Ju 52 aircraft. This effectively grounded HB-HOP (and another Ju-Air Ju-52 HB-HOS) and so the plane is now retired and on display at this superb museum.

If you have been spotting at FRA, you may have noted the name of the village Zeppelinheim. The airport opened to aircraft and airships in July 1936 but its two huge airship hangars were already demolished in 1940. The Fw 200 Condor, D-ADHR Saarland, dates the photograph in July 1938 at the earliest. The second Ju 52 is D-ALUN Kurt Wintgens and the leftmost aircraft is a Ju 86 which can only be D-AJUU Vogelsberg. Photo from: Fortepan

First flown at Dessau on 4 September 1939, this Malért Ju 52 is seen wearing wartime red, white and green bands around the rear fuselage. To Hungarian air force in June 1942. The aircraft name means 'Valiant Dezső Szentkirályi'. He was a famous Hungarian World War 1 pilot who lost his life in the crash of Bristol F.2B Fighter H-MAEA near Szeged, Hungary on 2 June 1925. Photo described as 'Opening of Fornebu' but neutrality markings and blacked-out windows make clear the shot was taken after the outbreak of WWII. The aircraft seems to be painted orange overall. We assume ABA service to Oslo ceased with the German invasion in Norway. Date may be 22 November 1939 when SE-AFA flew the first service between Stockholm and Perth in Scotland, as an alternative to London, with a very experienced crew - Bernt Balchen and Karl Gunnar Lindner. This red Ju 52 was Hermann Goering's personal aircraft at the time. Goering stopped by here after an Adriatic holiday and talks in Belgrade. Aircraft later renamed after Kurt Wolff, another WWI ace. Later GC-AF in the Luftwaffe. Crashed and written off the Lufthansa books in 1942. Photo from: Fortepan
