Because of the 50th anniversary of the London-Melbourne race, in which the Uiver won the handicap-classe, this DC-2 (owned by Colgate W. Darden) was brought to the Netherlands to fly the route once more. They toured a couple of Dutch airports (Eelde being one of them) before heading off to the UK for the start of the journey. A nice crowd looks on as the DC-2 is marshalled into position.

Originally delivered to KLM (PH-AKH) 1935. Delivered to Finnish Air Force on February 1940 during Winter War via Stockholm by Swedish volunteers and using registration SE-AKE. Re-registered first as DC-1 and later as DO-1. Entered service as bomber, but soon find role in different transport missions. In Air Force until 1955 and after that converted as a café (located in Hämeenlinna) until sold to Finnish Air Force Museum 1981. Was restored 2009-2011 with a color scheme it had in Spring 1944 and moved to display on Tuulos Shopping Centre 2015.

Schiphol in 1935, view towards the north. The airfield is becoming a tourist attraction. An old KLM Fokker .VIIa is presumably in use for sightseeing flights. Beyond the terrace is a D.XVI fighter. The DC-2 is named Koetilang, Malay for bulbul bird, reflecting the importance of the East Indies to KLM and to Dutch society in general. This DC-2 was destroyed by bombing here on 10 May 1940. KLM's London to Melbourne Air Race adventure might very well have ended in disaster when Uiver got caught in a thunderstorm at night. Thanks to the townsfolk of Albury, the DC-2 was able to land safely, and here Captain Parmentier is seen taking off from the racecourse, leaving the rest of the crew and the payload behind. This was probably against the race rules but no one seems to have protested. Photo from: State Library Victoria
