'The captain C.G. von Rosen waves his wife goodbye, though the chocks are still in place.' Adventurous Swedish Count Carl Gustaf von Rosen was hired by KLM after flying in Ethiopia. He married stewardess Hanny Krijgsman in 1938. He took a leave of absence to fly a bomber DC-2 for Finland during the Winter War, and was back in Holland just in time to evacuate a KLM DC-3 to Britain in May 1940. Apparently the RAF did not accept him because he had just visited his uncle - Hermann Göring! He worked for ABA Aerotransport until 1945 and then went back to Africa. This beautifully presented DC-2 has a rich history, going back to 1935 when delivered to KLM as PH-AKH. It was acquired by the Finnish AF in 1940 via Sweden under registration SE-AKE and served in the Winter War, initially performing bombing and later VIP transport duties. When retired by the Air Force in 1955 it was converted as a café in Hämeenlinna, until saved by the Finnish Air Force Museum in 1981. After restoration between 2009 and 2011 in the colours worn during the later war period, it was placed on display in its own building at Tuulos Shopping Centre in 2015.

Flown by Bruce Cunningham's Douglas Historical Foundation, and seen here undergoing an engine change. Nowadays this aircraft wears period TWA livery as an exhibit at the Museum of Flight, Boeing Field, Seattle.

Withdrawn from use in 1940. This aircraft was known as Quantico 1. It is believed to have been based at Turner Field because it had been built to accommodate larger higher performance aircraft than the original Quantico airstrip known as Brown Field. The B in BNA is for Berry Field. The airport was built in 1936 for the 105th Observation Squadron as well as commercial use. The source gives 3 May 1940 as the photo date but the early B-17s on the left suggest that this may be the airport's June 1937 opening instead. The famous Uiver was the very first DC to be exported. It was shipped from New York to Rotterdam where it was offloaded at Waalhaven airport for reassembly. After some searching for a bird name starting with U it was christened on 28 September. After its participation in the MacRobertson Air Race in October it crashed in Iraq on 20 December, just as the Fokker F.XVIII PH-AIS Snip, in the background, was crossing the Atlantic on its flight to the Dutch West Indies. A30-14 being dismantled after a landing accident. It was trucked to Cairns then shipped to Melbourne for repairs. In 1947 it was sold to Marshall Airways for use as spares for its DC-2 VH-CDZ. A30-14 remained stored in Sid Marshall's yard until after his death in the 1970s. Sold to the Dutch Dakota Association in 1987 and shipped to the Netherlands. Renault planned a DC-2 version with its engines but after testing of this state-owned aircraft, CEMA more or less rejected the DC-2 as unstable - not without justification.
