In the early 1920s American commercial aviation was begging to be regulated by the government! One of the problems of the lack of supervision was that it was difficult to get aircraft insured. The N letter register was set up not by the government but by Underwriters' Laboratories. Less than 50 aircraft were entered in this voluntary register, however. N-ABCC was one of the first. UL suggest the photo was taken in November 1921 when John Yonge, on the right, became the ninth pilot registered by UL. Photo from: UL Solutions

Sold in the US after the war ended. Canadian Aeroplanes was the government-owned former Curtiss factory at 1244 Dufferin Street. It is not clear if there was an airstrip at the factory. The factory occupied six acres and all photos of aircraft there were taken inside the building. Captions on those photos suggest the aircraft left the factory dismantled. The RFC had two training airfields a short distance to the factory. Library and Archives Canada

H5240 was supplied to New Zealand as part of the post World War I Imperial Gift to help set up an air arm. Instead, it passed to Walsh Bros, trading New Zealand Flying School. H5240 was registered G-NZAB in 1922 but never carried the civil registration. In 1924 the school and aircraft were taken over by the new New Zealand Permanent Air Force. H5240 crashed at Waihi on May 26 that year. Longlands was Hastings's first aerodrome on land leased by Walsh Bros. It was replaced by the current Bridge Pa aerodrome (NZHS) in 1934.
