The Stearman X-100 bomber first flew on 16 November 1938 according to one source, powered by uncommon P&W R-2180-A Twin Hornet engines. The original nose shape has been changed to a stepped nose here. The type was rejected, but the sole prototype was acquired by the USAAC as the XA-21 attack bomber. Rudder striping abolished in 1940. To ground instructional airframe at Wright Field in 1942. Photo from: National Museum of the US Air Force

C-47A 42-92482 to US Marines as an R4D-5, BuNo 17136, in January 1944. The original caption suggest the Edwards test centre used three R4Ds, one at a time, between 1952 and 1984, and that this was the second one between 1956 and 1979. One of their jobs was to check if lakebeds were dry enough for X-plane emergency landings. Last registration of this airframe, XA-ROM. Photo from: NASA

Shell's attractive Lockheed Orion, flown by Jimmy Doolittle. It was built in Detroit in 1931 as a DL-2A Altair with a metal fuselage. Used as a mailplane by TWA. Following an accident, it was rebuilt as an L-9C in 1932 and sold to Shell. Damaged in 1936, then sold to Paul Mantz for air racing in 1938. The only surviving Orion, it was eventually preserved in Lucerne, Switzerland as "CH-167". Does anyone recognize this airport? Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

A nice shot of D-IKNI, demonstrated in the USA by Gerd Achgelis. This is surely America - does anyone recognize the airport building? Achgelis arrived in New York by ship on 21 August 1936 and flew the Stösser to Los Angeles for an aerobatic display at the National Air Races.

The first prototype of the S-55, first flown on 10 November 1949. The S-55 was the first successful single-rotor helicopter capable of transporting significant loads. The key was to put the big piston engine in the nose, and the changeable payload and fuel in the centre of gravity. Initially 49-2012 had a half horizontal tailplane with endplate on this side instead of the two canted fins seen here. Print stamped June 1952.

First flown on 22 September 1947, the S-53, naval designation HJS, was a bigger development of the S-51. It was a failure as the centre of gravity shifted too much with heavier payloads carried all forward of the engine, and the twin-rotor Piasecki HUP Retriever became the US Navy's new rescue helicopter instead. Sikorsky solved the problem by putting the engine in the nose of the S-55. BuNo 30370 was the second of two S-53 airframes built. Photo from: Vertical Flight Society
