Photo must have been taken on 12 July 1957, the day of the first US presidential flight in a helicopter in a simulated evacuation of the government to Camp David. Eisenhower took off from the South Lawn of the White House in a Bell H-13J, chosen for the type's safety record. Six H-19, H-21 and HUS-1 helicopters operated from The Ellipse. HMX-1 was then an experimental unit. 143973 delivered in May 1957, destroyed in Vietnam on 31 January 1968. Photo by: Paul Schutzer / Life

Pacusan Dreamboat made a couple of significant flights. In December 1945 it broke the transcontinental speed record from Burbank to New York. In October 1946 it flew non-stop from Hawaii to Cairo over the North Pole. This photo may show the crew being honoured in Washington on their return from Cairo but this is not definite. The National Air & Space Museum opened in 1976, one year before I took this slide. The Wright Flyer was suspended in the entrance atrium along with the Spirit of St. Louis, the Bell X-1, and the North American X-15. More recently, the Flyer had its own display gallery.

Richard Byrd testing a rubber lifeboat for the upcoming MacMillan Arctic Expedition. According to one newspaper, this was to take place at Anacostia although others claim this is 'New York'. A-5914 is listed as a VE-7SF, a single-seat landplane fighter variant of the VE-7 Bluebird. This floatplane is a two-seater. One VE-7SF was reportedly converted to VE-7SH floatplane. Two days before the end of WWI, a lost German pilot landed this Fokker D.VII behind allied lines near Verdun. Sent to the USA as a war prize, it was eventually added to the Smithsonian's collection. Pictured after sunset (ISO 12000) over the Potomac River in D.C. This Huey is former US Navy BuNo 158562. After its career with the US Marine Corps, the helicopter arrived at AMARG on 26 January 2011 with inventory code 7H0057. After some seven months of storage, the USAF selected the Bell for conversion. The helicopter was taken from AMARG on 18 August 2011 and was moved to Fleet Readiness Center East Cherry Point (NC) for depot-level maintenance overhaul. Pictured over the Rock Creek Parkway near the Connecticut Ave. One of some 25 Hueys still in service with the 1st Helicopter Squadron. The squadron is based at Joint Base Andrews (MD). The squadron's primary mission is to be prepared to evacuate high-ranking personnel from the Capital area in the event of a national emergency. But it secondairy mission is most common: supporting high-ranking executive Branch, dignitaries, military leaders and other VIPs.

A Marine One or Two (one = carrying the President, two = carrying vice president) flying over DC. Of course other prominent individuals (i.e. White House cabinet and staff) are able to board the VH-3D too. The white top is one of eleven in service and was pictured over the Potomac River. The VH-3D entered service in 1978 and is expected to be replaced by the VH-92A from 2023.

'The first plane of the new transcontinental air line, of which Col. Lindbergh is one of the organizers, photographed at Boiling Fields [sic].' Bolling Field was the same runway as Anacostia until 1935, when the US Army moved to a new Bolling Field nearby. TAT offered the first coast-to-coast air service between New York and Los Angeles in 1929, although the 48-hour journey involved a night train between NY and Columbus, Ohio and another one between Waynoka, Oklahoma and Clovis, New Mexico. 'Take A Train' soon merged with Maddux Air Lines, and then with Western Air Express to form TWA in 1930. Photo from: Library of Congress
