Spectacular livery at a time when it had to be hand-painted, Big Fish was operated by American Trans Oceanic from the shores of Lake Worth to New York. The aircraft was never civil registered - it was not a requirement at the time -but was given the number 5, presumably a fleet number. Big Fish crashed sometime during 1921. The Stansted Carvair assembly line was shut down in 1967. Three Southend-built unused nose sections remained there along with unsold Carvair no. 17 LX-IOF (which subsequently became G-AXAI). The three nose sections were brought back to Southend where one was used in the conversion of C-54E VH-INM as Carvair no. 21, the final one built. The subject of this photo is nose section no. 22 or 23 on the dump at Southend over 4 years later.

This homebuilt, but unfinished, plane has sat at the back of this hangar for many years. It probably will never be finished and, of course, has never received a registration.

The Boeing Bird of Prey was a black project aircraft, intended to demonstrate stealth technology. It was developed by McDonnell Douglas and Boeing in the 1990s. As an internal project, this aircraft was not given an X-plane designation. The first flight was in 1996, and some forty flights were performed through the program's conclusion in 1999. The aircraft, which had given the designation "YF-118G" as a cover, was made public on 18 October 2002. The Bird of Prey was put on display at the National Museum of the USAF at Wright-Patterson AFB on 16 July 2003.

Thia Noralpha was built in 1947 and flew with the Aero Club Rene Mouchotte at Ermenonville, Ile France Haute-Normandie as F-BLEZ. The registration was cancelled in 1965 and the following year joined the Belgian register as OO-RLR until this was in turn cancelled in August 1981. The plane passed into the ownership of a pirvate collector until he passed in 2009 and the frame came to the MM Park military museum (in which there is a world class collection of tanks).

In 1986, the governments of Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK signed a memorandum of understanding to investigate an improved version of the A129, alternatively called the Joint European Helicopter Tonal or Light Attack Helicopter (LAH) with new powerplants, as well as a new rotor system, retractable landing gear, improved sensors and more powerful armament. However, the LAH project collapsed in 1990 following the UK and the Netherlands independently deciding to withdraw from the program and eventually procuring the AH-64 Apache instead. This mock-up (?) is on display at Volandia.

Built by the Canterbury Aviation Company at Sockburn (later Wigram) aerodrome. First flight at the hands of the company CFI C.M. Hill took place on January 17, 1919. Hill was killed in the aircraft on February 1 when the wings failed while performing aerobatics over the Riccarton racecourse not far from Sockburn. Hill became the first person killed in an aeroplane accident in New Zealand. The first aviation death had been a balloonist in 1899. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

As I understand it, this fuselage section was left uncompleted when Dornier folded. If this is incorrect, or if anyone can help with more details or information, then I would be happy to update this picture. On display at this interesting place, something of a cross between a farm, zoo, restaurant and aeroplane museum.

In between the Stout AT-2 and the Ford 4-AT, Stout built this hideous trimotor aircraft. Its flying qualities were as terrible as its looks. Ford had William Stout removed from the design office and moved on with the AT-4 which looked like a metal copy of the Fokker F.VII-3m. The sole 3-AT was destroyed in a factory fire.
