In the 1950s, designer René Leduc was awarded a contract for two examples of a short-range supersonic interceptor, intended to fulfill the high-speed interceptor role. The first prototype had a thick barrel-like monocoque fuselage with a coaxial turbojet-ramjet powerplant to enable unassisted operation, and a protruding nose section housing the cockpit and escape capsule for the pilot. It reached a speed of Mach 1.15 in December 1957, but was damaged shortly afterwards when it caught fire while taking off. The program was cancelled shortly afterwards. This is the unflown second prototype 022.

First flown from Les Mureaux on 30 April 1947, the Norazur seems to have been designed to meet a post-war French military requirement for a light transport capable of carrying ten troops. As F-WFAB, this prototype was flown at the 1949 Paris Air Show at Orly, but the twin-pusher design was given up soon thereafter. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

The Leduc 0.10 was a French research aircraft and one of the first aircraft to fly powered solely by a ramjet. Ramjets cannot produce thrust at zero airspeed and so cannot move from a standing start. It has to be carried aloft by a parasite aircraft, hence, the display in the Hall des Prototypes. The pilot controlled the aircraft from within the inner shell and the first powered flight from atop an Languedoc mother ship was made in April 1949 over Toulouse. The two initial prototypes both crashed but this third prototype completed 83 test flights.

A successor to the Ouragan and Mystère II, this prototype made its first flight in September, 1952. The aircraft entered service with the AdlA in 1955 and was exported to India and Israel. This is the plane that broke the sound barrier for the first time in France, in a dive in January 1953, during its 34th flight. In memory of this episode, the pilot had a broken wall painted on the plane's nose.

Designed in 1954, the Alouette II was the first mass-produced turbine-powered helicopter, the powerplant being much lighter and more reliable than a piston engine. A total of 1324 frames were built in France plus several hundred in India. The model on display is the prototype 01, which made its final flight to the museum in October, 1995.

The first variable-sweep aircraft from Dassault emerged as the single-engine, two-seat Mirage G fighter in 1967. The Mirage G was developed into a twin-engine, two-seat nuclear strike fighter, the Mirage G4. When under construction the requirements changed and the French military requested that the design be converted into a dedicated interceptor, This first flew in May 1971 and the second aircraft, the single-seat G8-02 first flying over a year later. However, As no funding was included for the type in the 1971-1976 French defence budget it did not enter production.

This is one of four prototypes and was the airframe used as the Rafale A technology demonstrator, making its first flight in July 1986. The plane was TOC by the French AF but operated by Dassault and flew concurrently with its military serial and the civil registration F-ZWRE. Later it became a flying test bed for the Snecma M88 turbofan engine as the left powerplant. The right powerplant retained the original GE F404. The plane made its 867th and last flight on 4th January 1994 before being donated to the museum for display in April 2009.
