The X-3 was designed for sustained Mach 2 flight, but could not even reach Mach 1. It did not have the intended engines. Its take-off speed was certainly high - 480 km/h (300 mph). Only the first of two examples, 49-2892, was completed and flown, for the first time in October 1952. The aircraft was handed over to NACA in August 1954, becoming NACA 892. The 500th Sabre. The rough writing on the gun cover panel suggests the Life photographer had not been invited to Inglewood to celebrate the milestone number. He was shooting for an article entitled 'Airplane Industry Expansion', probably in response to the outbreak of war in Korea. On the left is serial number 49-1299 (construction number 161-293), wearing its line number 514. The T-28 is also in full production. 49-1285 crashed near the Gunpowder River in Maryland in 1954. New F-86As at the Inglewood factory, now the cargo area at the southeast corner of LAX. The Sabres wear line numbers. 49-1290 is the 283th F-86A in the third production batch and after three XP-86s, 32 in the first batch and 187 in the second, this is indeed the 505th Sabre. The others are 49-1293 / 508, 49-1287 / 502, 49-1300 / 515, 49-1289 / 504, 49-1285 / 500 and 49-1299 / 514. Top right is an early F-86D. Photo by: Edward Clark / Life

The Boeing 314 prototype was launched into the Duwamish River on 31 May 1938 and towed to Elliott Bay. It first flew on 7 June. Test pilot Eddie Allen reported that directional control was inadequate. The single tailfin was replaced by endplate fins but this was still insufficient and a central fin was put back on to make it a triple tail. NC18601 entered Pan Am service as Honolulu Clipper. On 4 November 1945 on a flight from Honolulu to San Francisco it made an emergency landing on the ocean with two engines out. Damaged, it was sunk by naval gunfire. Photo from: Boeing

The Stearman X-100 bomber first flew on 16 November 1938 according to one source, powered by uncommon P&W R-2180-A Twin Hornet engines. The original nose shape has been changed to a stepped nose here. The type was rejected, but the sole prototype was acquired by the USAAC as the XA-21 attack bomber. Rudder striping abolished in 1940. A motorcycle of the air, designed by Dutchman Frits Koolhoven for British Aerial Transport and powered by an ABC Gnat aero engine of 40 hp. The sole example never carried a registration. Performance was poor and handling 'too tricky' according to Flight. The journal suggested that it drew attention mainly from women and boys at the 1920 Olympia Aero Exhibition, while men knew better. The first Fw 61 helicopter, first flown untethered - and with an uncovered fuselage - on 26 June 1936. Photo assumed taken at Bremen before Hanna Reitsch flew this airframe inside the Deutschlandhalle. It had been put on display at the entrance of the Fw works at Bremen when it was destroyed by bombing in June 1942. Note that the fuselage was taken from an Fw 44 Stieglitz. The engine drove the two rotors and a small propeller which was only for cooling and gave negligible forward thrust. The location is not certain. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Crop of original photo with an H-5G, 48-528 on the right. According to the original caption, the Skymaster was transporting troops from this undisclosed airbase to a more advanced airbase. Later converted to HC-54D rescue aircraft. Assigned to 57th ARS, Lajes, Azores, it collided with a HC-97G, 52-2773, during filming and crashed into the sea off Bermuda on 29 July 1964. The Vertol 107 prototype, N74060, first flew in 1958. Before the US Marines adopted the design as the HRB Sea Knight in 1961, the US Army tested three YHC-1A airframes, but the Army opted for a heavier transport helicopter, the Chinook, which was confusingly designated YHC-1B before becoming the CH-47. This was the first YHC-1A. The HRB and HC-1A designations were unified to CH-46 in 1962. 58-5514 assigned to NASA in 1964. Later NASA 533. Airframe withdrawn in 1975 with 685 flight hours, fate unknown. Photo from: NASA Langley

Prototype of a 'personal helicopter' designed by Lewis McCarty and built by De Lackner Helicopters from New York. The US Army ordered a dozen examples of the DH-5 Aerocycle model. Its military designation YHO-2 was soon changed to HZ-1 in a category of its own. It was hoped that the craft could be flown by soldiers after a brief instruction, but it wasn't that easy and obviously the rotor was extremely dangerous to the pilot and bystanders alike.
