The Eagle, only retrospectively designated Model 19 by Curtiss, was a 1919 airliner with a nicely crafted fuselage seating eight people, including the one or two pilots. It was originally a trimotor. The Eagle II was a twin and the Eagle III was powered by single 400-hp Liberty engine. Only a few Eagles were built, the only customer being the US Army Air Service which bought three Eagle IIIs. Optimistically called a 'hospital ship', s/n 64243 was equipped as a four-litter ambulance, but crashed on 28 May 1921. The pilot and all six passengers were killed. President Woodrow Wilson came to see the departure of the US Post Offices's first scheduled mail flight to Philadelphia, but it was quite an embarrassment. First, the US Army Air Service crew had forgotten to fuel the new JN-4HM mailplane and then the pilot, Lt Boyle, was seen flying off in the wrong direction. Trying again two days later, the inexperienced Boyle got lost again. He had been selected by the Post Office because he was engaged to the daughter of someone important. Appropriately, Jenny 38262 flies upside down in a misprinted stamp. Photo from: US Air Force

In 1944, twenty-one (Y)R-5A helicopters were converted to R-5D standard through the addition of a nosewheel and a rescue hoist. This one wears post-1947 roundels. It is seen here in North Carolina. We have a nice colour photo of this H-5D, as the designation then was, at Selfridge AFB in 1953. On 14 December 1953 it had an accident at Ellington AFB, Texas while with the 47th ARS. The last H-5s retired from US military service in 1957. Photo from: Iredell County Public Library

The HE 8 (not He 8, E for monoplane) reconnaissance seaplane was developed for the Danish navy which gave it the HM.II designation. Six examples were bought from Heinkel in 1928 and 16 more produced by the Danish navy yard. Oddly they were numbered in reverse order so s/n 99 was the first one and 78 the last one, built in 1938 when the design was thoroughly obsolete. 87 is seen in the harbour of Nuuk in Greenland. The last Reliant. This one-off V-77B, fitted with a 450-hp R-985 engine, has construction number 501, so it followed on the production batch of 500 military V-77s that mostly went to Britain. Apparently it was tested by the US Navy at NAS Patuxent River. 62 other V-77s, returned by Britain in 1945, were allocated BuNo serials, but none seem to have served in the USN. The Vultee V-90 was designed as a heavy single-seat dive-bomber for the US Army. In 1943 the USAAF changed its role to low-level attack and then cancelled it. However, the first prototype was completed as a testbed for the 3000-hp P&W R-4360 Wasp Major engine, needed for the B-29. It first flew on 11 February 1944. Here it is seen during testing at NAS Patuxent River as the US Navy compared this aircraft to its Douglas AD Skyraider and Martin AM Mauler. Subsequently used by Pratt & Whitney as NX60373. One of the last designs of the Thomas-Morse Aircraft Corporation of Ithaca, New York, the P-13 Viper fighter had pretty good performance and handling, but the Curtiss H-1640 Chieftain engine seen installed here had cooling problems that were never resolved. Prototype fitted with a Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp as P-13A by September 1930 but no production. Aircraft lost at Wright Field on 1 October 1930 after catching fire in flight. This was the first aircraft of DDL and possibly the first entry in the Danish register. It was reportedly ex German navy 3078 and ex D-380. On 7 August 1920 it flew the first DDL service from the Refshaleøen naval air station to Warnemünde via Malmö. Back to Germany after a few months as D-146 as the Allies did not approve its sale or lease to Denmark. Apparently there was a second T-DABA, ex D-43, in 1921. Photo from: Library of Congress

The Maryland ANG flew the F-51H from 1951 until 1955, and these aircraft equipped an aerobatic team, the Guardian Angels, in 1952-53. The lightweight P-51H differed significantly from earlier Mustangs and was very fast, with a top speed of 760 kmh (472 mph). It did not see action in World War II nor in Korea. 555 Hs were completed out of 2000 ordered. The second aircraft is 44-64505 and the fourth one is 44-64453. The third is 44-64659 or perhaps 44-64559 - not 64-64859, as that serial belongs to a cancelled P-51H. Photo from: US Air Force

Aircraft of No 1426 (Enemy Aircraft) Flight at RAF Collyweston , the western side of Wittering. Its German crew of 2.(Fern)/AufklGr.22 mistakenly landed the plane behind Allied lines at Montecarvino airfield, near Salerno, on 27 November 1943. Photo date not given by IWM but another shot taken by RAF photographer Goodchild at Collyweston is dated 22 February 1945. This is not the Me 410 which you may have seen in the RAF Museum Cosford. Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-5/U8, PN999, undergoes an engine service while airmen repaint the wings of Junkers Ju 88S-1, TS472.'
