Built by Ben Jones around 1937. Damaged on or soon after its maiden flight. Acquired by White Aircraft, of Leroy, NY, which rebuilt it. The flying tiger artwork and Chinese characters were added when Chinese pilot Lee Ya-Ching used it to raise money for her homeland during its war with Japan. The S-125 was cancelled from the register soon after US entered WW2 as White concentrated on making components for gliders. Company closed after the war. Prepared for a proposed flight from Tacoma, Washington, to Tokyo following the Pacific Rim by pilot Bob Wark and copilot Eddie Brown. 100 miles into the flight engine trouble forced it down at Lansdowne Field, Vancouver. A short hop to nearby Ladner Field resulted in the undercarriage being torn off, ending the whole venture. The aircraft is now preserved at the Owls Head Transportation Museum, Maine. Photo probably taken in 1951 - the source says 1950 but this Constellation was not delivered until the last days of 1950 and the scene does not look winterish. Note 'Trans World Airline' title even though the airline pluralized its name already on 17 May 1950. Photo by: René Gardi / ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

The DC-3 was built in 1938. In that same year, Bachmann, Blumenthal & Co Flugzeugbau (BBF) began manufacture of aircraft parts at this airfield, taking over a Gotha plant. Nuremberg's commercial airport was then Marienberg, which took over from the old Fürth / Nuremberg - Atzenhof airport in 1933. The industrial airfield served as a temporary airport from 1950, until the modern airport (EDNN) opened in 1955. Photo by: René Gardi / ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

Paramaribo's smaller airport, Zorg en Hoop opened in 1952. PZ-TAG was registered in January 1958. It was one of two Aero Commanders registered to the Surinaamse Luchtvaart Maatschappij (SLM). Both crashed in 1959. PZ-TAG flew into a hill near the indigenous village of Paloemeu on 6 October due to engine trouble in fog. The two fatalities were SLM co-founder Ronald Kappel and Vincent Fajks, a Polish pilot who married a Surinamese woman. The Paloemeu airstrip (SMPA) which they helped constructing was named after Fajks. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)
