The last Reliant. This one-off V-77B, fitted with a 450-hp R-985 engine, has construction number 501, so it followed on the production batch of 500 military V-77s that mostly went to Britain. Apparently it was tested by the US Navy at NAS Patuxent River. 62 other V-77s, returned by Britain in 1945, were allocated BuNo serials, but none seem to have served in the USN. Owned by someone in Virginia, N39414 was cancelled in 1956. Photo from: Naval History and Heritage Command

The Vultee V-90 was designed as a heavy single-seat dive-bomber for the US Army. In 1943 the USAAF changed its role to low-level attack and then cancelled it. However, the first prototype was completed as a testbed for the 3000-hp P&W R-4360 Wasp Major engine, needed for the B-29. It first flew on 11 February 1944. Here it is seen during testing at NAS Patuxent River as the US Navy compared this aircraft to its Douglas AD Skyraider and Martin AM Mauler. Subsequently used by Pratt & Whitney as NX60373. Scrapped in 1950. Photo from: Naval History and Heritage Command

One of the last designs of the Thomas-Morse Aircraft Corporation of Ithaca, New York, the P-13 Viper fighter had pretty good performance and handling, but the Curtiss H-1640 Chieftain engine seen installed here had cooling problems that were never resolved. Prototype fitted with a Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp as P-13A by September 1930 but no production. Aircraft lost at Wright Field on 1 October 1930 after catching fire in flight. This was the first aircraft of DDL and possibly the first entry in the Danish register. It was reportedly ex German navy 3078 and ex D-380. On 7 August 1920 it flew the first DDL service from the Refshaleøen naval air station to Warnemünde via Malmö. Back to Germany after a few months as D-146 as the Allies did not approve its sale or lease to Denmark. Apparently there was a second T-DABA, ex D-43, in 1921. Photo from: Library of Congress

The Maryland ANG flew the F-51H from 1951 until 1955, and these aircraft equipped an aerobatic team, the Guardian Angels, in 1952-53. The lightweight P-51H differed significantly from earlier Mustangs and was very fast, with a top speed of 760 kmh (472 mph). It did not see action in World War II nor in Korea. 555 Hs were completed out of 2000 ordered. The second aircraft is 44-64505 and the fourth one is 44-64453. The third is 44-64659 or perhaps 44-64559 - not 64-64859, as that serial belongs to a cancelled P-51H. Photo from: US Air Force

The X-3 was designed for sustained Mach 2 flight, but could not even reach Mach 1. It did not have the intended engines. Its take-off speed was certainly high - 480 km/h (300 mph). Only the first of two examples, 49-2892, was completed and flown, for the first time in October 1952. The aircraft was handed over to NACA in August 1954, becoming NACA 892. Loomis Dean apparently took this snapshot while he was at Edwards to photograph a Douglas X-3 Stiletto flight, which must have been between August 1954 and May 1956. The helo was delivered earlier in 1954. It was still with AFFTC in 1959 but its fate is unknown. Photo by: Loomis Dean / Life

The 500th Sabre. The rough writing on the gun cover panel suggests the Life photographer had not been invited to Inglewood to celebrate the milestone number. He was shooting for an article entitled 'Airplane Industry Expansion', probably in response to the outbreak of war in Korea. On the left is serial number 49-1299 (construction number 161-293), wearing its line number 514. The T-28 is also in full production. 49-1285 crashed near the Gunpowder River in Maryland in 1954. New F-86As at the Inglewood factory, now the cargo area at the southeast corner of LAX. The Sabres wear line numbers. 49-1290 is the 283th F-86A in the third production batch and after three XP-86s, 32 in the first batch and 187 in the second, this is indeed the 505th Sabre. The others are 49-1293 / 508, 49-1287 / 502, 49-1300 / 515, 49-1289 / 504, 49-1285 / 500 and 49-1299 / 514. Top right is an early F-86D. Photo by: Edward Clark / Life

The Boeing 314 prototype was launched into the Duwamish River on 31 May 1938 and towed to Elliott Bay. It first flew on 7 June. Test pilot Eddie Allen reported that directional control was inadequate. The single tailfin was replaced by endplate fins but this was still insufficient and a central fin was put back on to make it a triple tail. NC18601 entered Pan Am service as Honolulu Clipper. On 4 November 1945 on a flight from Honolulu to San Francisco it made an emergency landing on the ocean with two engines out. Damaged, it was sunk by naval gunfire. Photo from: Boeing
