Bomber model of Ford 5-AT-C with curious XB-906 designation. Single-pilot cockpit, two dorsal open gun positions, internal bomb racks. Markings have a military look, but the reg is civil and the photo is assumed taken at Dearborn as the aircraft crashed near the Ford airport during factory testing on 19 September 1931. Both wings detached after a steep turn at high speed. Ford chief test pilot Roy Manning and a mechanic killed. No series production undertaken. Photo from: National Museum of the US Air Force

The first Tri-Motor for the US Army Air Corps, an early 4-AT-A. Ex NC3444, it arrived at Wright Field on 8 February 1928, then officially designated as the XC-3. Remained in service until July 1932. By 1931 it no longer wore code P-506. The Army ordered seven 4-AT-Es as C-3As, later modified to C-9 standard. The sole C-4 was a 5-AT-B model and was followed by four 5-AT-Ds as C-4As. There was also a bomber prototype called XB-906, civil reg NX9652. Photo from: US Air Force

The UAL Mainliner is framed with the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, Yerba Buena Island and Treasure Island, which only looked like this during the 1939-1940 Golden Gate International Exposition. No Pan Am flying boats are visible in the Clipper Cove between the two islands. Treasure Island was to become a land airport after the fair, but became a naval facility instead. NC16087 flew for UAL until 1955. As PI-C942 it crashed in the Philippines in 1965. Photo from: SFO Museum

One of the few good photographs available of the B-60, ordered originally as a B-36 Peacemaker variant. Only the first prototype was flown, 20 times by Convair from 18 April 1952 and just four times by the US Air Force in January 1953. It is seen here over Kramer Junction near Edwards AFB. The USAF cancelled the B-60 already in August 1952 as the B-52 was way superior. Photo from: US Air Force

The Eagle, only retrospectively designated Model 19 by Curtiss, was a 1919 airliner with a nicely crafted fuselage seating eight people, including the one or two pilots. It was originally a trimotor. The Eagle II was a twin and the Eagle III was powered by single 400-hp Liberty engine. Only a few Eagles were built, the only customer being the US Army Air Service which bought three Eagle IIIs. Optimistically called a 'hospital ship', s/n 64243 was equipped as a four-litter ambulance, but crashed on 28 May 1921. The pilot and all six passengers were killed. President Woodrow Wilson came to see the departure of the US Post Offices's first scheduled mail flight to Philadelphia, but it was quite an embarrassment. First, the US Army Air Service crew had forgotten to fuel the new JN-4HM mailplane and then the pilot, Lt Boyle, was seen flying off in the wrong direction. Trying again two days later, the inexperienced Boyle got lost again. He had been selected by the Post Office because he was engaged to the daughter of someone important. Appropriately, Jenny 38262 flies upside down in a misprinted stamp. Photo from: US Air Force

In 1944, twenty-one (Y)R-5A helicopters were converted to R-5D standard through the addition of a nosewheel and a rescue hoist. This one wears post-1947 roundels. It is seen here in North Carolina. We have a nice colour photo of this H-5D, as the designation then was, at Selfridge AFB in 1953. On 14 December 1953 it had an accident at Ellington AFB, Texas while with the 47th ARS. Photo dated circa 1958 by the source, though there's another picture of N1026V in front of SFO's new Central Passenger Terminal taken in 1954. N1026V served with Pan Am until 1961, by then renamed Clipper Malay. The Coast Guard HO4S helicopter is 1305 which saved many lives in 1955. Photo from: SFO Museum

The HE 8 (not He 8, E for monoplane) reconnaissance seaplane was developed for the Danish navy which gave it the HM.II designation. Six examples were bought from Heinkel in 1928 and 16 more produced by the Danish navy yard. Oddly they were numbered in reverse order so s/n 99 was the first one and 78 the last one, built in 1938 when the design was thoroughly obsolete. 87 is seen in the harbour of Nuuk in Greenland. The last Reliant. This one-off V-77B, fitted with a 450-hp R-985 engine, has construction number 501, so it followed on the production batch of 500 military V-77s that mostly went to Britain. Apparently it was tested by the US Navy at NAS Patuxent River. 62 other V-77s, returned by Britain in 1945, were allocated BuNo serials, but none seem to have served in the USN. Owned by someone in Virginia, N39414 was cancelled in 1956. Photo from: Naval History and Heritage Command

The Vultee V-90 was designed as a heavy single-seat dive-bomber for the US Army. In 1943 the USAAF changed its role to low-level attack and then cancelled it. However, the first prototype was completed as a testbed for the 3000-hp P&W R-4360 Wasp Major engine, needed for the B-29. It first flew on 11 February 1944. Here it is seen during testing at NAS Patuxent River as the US Navy compared this aircraft to its Douglas AD Skyraider and Martin AM Mauler. Subsequently used by Pratt & Whitney as NX60373. Scrapped in 1950. Photo from: Naval History and Heritage Command

One of the last designs of the Thomas-Morse Aircraft Corporation of Ithaca, New York, the P-13 Viper fighter had pretty good performance and handling, but the Curtiss H-1640 Chieftain engine seen installed here had cooling problems that were never resolved. Prototype fitted with a Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp as P-13A by September 1930 but no production. Aircraft lost at Wright Field on 1 October 1930 after catching fire in flight.
