The Atlantic Fokker F.14 was a different aircraft from the Dutch Fokker F.XIV, having a parasol wing and cockpit aft of the cabin. The US Army placed a large order for 20 examples in 1931. These Y1C-14 aircraft were distributed over various airfields. The Y1 prefix, dropped in 1933, indicated 'funding from outside normal fiscal year procurement'. This airframe, 31-400, was fitted with the latest R-1820 Cyclone engine for evaluation at Wright Field, designated (Y1)C-14A. Dutch sources give construction number 1820. Photo from: US Air Force

Ex 43-17192, this early civil Skymaster was NX90423 for a while and is seen flying near Floyd Bennett Field here, with the bridge to the Rockaway Peninsula at the top of the photo. A very interesting photo of a CNAC S-43 at the Kai Tak seaplane pier. Airline service to Hong Kong had barely started in 1937, but a control tower, built in 1935, seems to be visible, checkered, to the right of the tailfin. The CNAC logo, the character 中, seems to be painted on the rudder. Two S-43s were transferred to CNAC by Pan Am. NC16930 reportedly named Chekiang. Reg cancelled as 'exported to China' on 8 August 1937, but the aircraft crashed on that very day while en route from Hong Kong to Shanghai. The seven passengers survived but three of the four crew were killed. Photo from: SFO Museum

The US Army bought two Vegas, both DL-1 aircraft with metal fuselages, built in Detroit. 31-405 was assigned to NACA at Langley and scrapped in 1935. The other one was 31-408, a DL-1B Special, designated Y1C-17. The fastest aircraft in the Army, it was used for an attempt at America's west to east transcontinental speed record, but crashed in Kentucky. Only two KAT-1 trainers were apparently built and both are framed here with Fuji KM JA3122 in the foreground, presumably at Miyazaki. The KAT-1 was designed as a military trainer, but the Fuji-built Beech T-34 was preferred. The first prototype JA3084, in the background, was tested by the Japanese army. Both KAT-1s deleted from the register as 'obsolete' in 1962 and both listed as having gone to the Kakamigahara museum in Gifu. The KAL-2 was a cabin variant of the KAT-1, not to be confused with the KAL-1, an earlier taildragger type. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

From the Beech T-34 Mentor, Fuji developed the four-seat LM-1 and LM-2 Nikko four-seat liaison aircraft, the KM civilian four-seater and the KM-2 military trainer with two seats side by side. The KM was used by the Civil Aviation College but we gather there were only two four-seat KMs: one XKM and one KM-1. JA3122 registered to the school on 3 March 1959. Destroyed in crash on take-off from Miyazaki on 4 September 1963. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

Two MB.90s were to take part in the Challenge International de Tourisme in August 1932, but did not show up although the first one, first flown in June, wears the event's tail stripes and number L2 underwing here. F-AMBO was displayed at the November 1932 Paris Salon, with a Renault 4Pei engine replacing its provisional DH Gipsy. In 1933 this aircraft was converted to MB.93 standard, but the MB.90 family was unsuccessful. Photo from: Dassault

Rollout of the second 707 airframe, soon renamed Clipper Maria. The first 707 airframe was N708PA, also for Pan Am but test-flown in Boeing colours. Compared to the 367-80 prototype and the C-135 Stratotanker (Model 717), the 707 had fuselage width expensively increased by just 10 cm (4 in). Photo from: Boeing

PSA phased out the Electra in 1969 but the type made a comeback in their very seventies colours in 1975 to serve Lake Tahoe, which did not allow full-jet airliners. Among the four airframes acquired was N171PS, which had been PSA's first Electra in 1959. By mid-1978 this aircraft was in the revised orange-red colour scheme as PSA had found that the pink did not weather well. The L-188 was finally retired in 1979. Photo from: SFO Museum

Photo dated 1955 by the source but this Viscount was built for MEA in 1957, and the titles indicate that the photo is from the 1960s. When this airframe returned from a lease to Jordan Airways in January 1964, MEA had taken over Air Liban and aircraft wore dual titles for a while. The Air Liban name was dropped in 1965. OD-ACU to Air Rhodesia in 1968 as VP-WAR. Broken up at Harare in 1986 with nearly 40,000 flight hours and 30,000 landings. Photo from: SFO Museum
