Two MB.90s were to take part in the Challenge International de Tourisme in August 1932, but did not show up although the first one, first flown in June, wears the event's tail stripes and number L2 underwing here. F-AMBO was displayed at the November 1932 Paris Salon, with a Renault 4Pei engine replacing its provisional DH Gipsy. In 1933 this aircraft was converted to MB.93 standard, but the MB.90 family was unsuccessful. Photo from: Dassault

Rollout of the second 707 airframe, soon renamed Clipper Maria. The first 707 airframe was N708PA, also for Pan Am but test-flown in Boeing colours. Compared to the 367-80 prototype and the C-135 Stratotanker (Model 717), the 707 had fuselage width expensively increased by just 10 cm (4 in). Photo from: Boeing

PSA phased out the Electra in 1969 but the type made a comeback in their very seventies colours in 1975 to serve Lake Tahoe, which did not allow full-jet airliners. Among the four airframes acquired was N171PS, which had been PSA's first Electra in 1959. By mid-1978 this aircraft was in the revised orange-red colour scheme as PSA had found that the pink did not weather well. The L-188 was finally retired in 1979. Photo from: SFO Museum

Photo dated 1955 by the source but this Viscount was built for MEA in 1957, and the titles indicate that the photo is from the 1960s. When this airframe returned from a lease to Jordan Airways in January 1964, MEA had taken over Air Liban and aircraft wore dual titles for a while. The Air Liban name was dropped in 1965. OD-ACU to Air Rhodesia in 1968 as VP-WAR. Broken up at Harare in 1986 with nearly 40,000 flight hours and 30,000 landings. Photo from: SFO Museum

TWA had its headquarters in Kansas City. This is Hangar 1 at KMKC, now home to the TWA Museum. Maintenance moved to the B-25 plant in Fairfax, across the Missouri River, after WWII, but a flood destroyed that and the Kansas City Overhaul Base was built adjacent to what became Kansas City International Airport (KMCI). Here we see two DC-3B Sky Sleepers, the second being NC17317. They were delivered in mid-1937 and do not yet wear the slogan 'The Lindbergh Line' which disappeared again from late 1938. One of the original five Ryan ST (no suffix) aircraft, powered by a 95-hp Menasco engine. NC18315 is a 1937 Taylorcraft A. Foster Lane's operation was temporarily 'evicted' from the south hangar at CMH by the US Navy during WWII. Seen here are the middle hangar, then used by Curtiss Flying Service, and the now demolished north hangar. N14911 is still current as of 2024 as an ST-A. It has been painted in Dutch East Indies warbird colours. Photo from: Lane Aviation

The first DC-2, registered in 1934. Foster Lane established the Port Columbus Flying School in 1935 and based himself in the TWA hangar. The front of the hangar originally carried the logo of TWA predecessor TAT, which was restored circa 2016, but what does it say here? NC13711 sold to Royal Air Force in 1941 as DG477 but by then it wore TWA scheme with two red tail stripes. Photo from: SFO Museum

Records show A6631 served less than six months and is unlikely to have left France but the photo is not at a typical operational aerodrome. Maybe the factory. . On May 1, 1917 A6631 struck an obstacle on takeoff. The pilot was able to complete the mission in the damaged aircraft but it appears to have been written off on return. The obsolete Morane-Saulnier P was withdrawn from RFC use in 1917. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

NC18945 is ready for boarding at gate 2. N18945 to Continental Air Lines in the 1950s. On 29 August 1955 it collided with a Piper Tri-Pacer, N3334B, while landing in Hobbs, New Mexico. The DC-3 landed safely and was repaired. Noted in Continental service at Dallas in 1962, when they still flew to some 'rural' destinations. Subsequent history of N18945 unclear but Continental subsidiary CASI operated DC-3s in SE Asia. Reg cancelled in 2013. Photo from: SFO Museum

Aircraft wears Eastern Air Lines livery but did not fly for EAL and was really owned by the Major League baseball team. The Dodgers used a DC-3 earlier. In 1959 the team shocked New York by becoming the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ties with Eastern Air Lines were not immediately broken, judging by Peter Gates' 1959 picture of N1R.
