The Orions were the successor of the Neptune and were delivered from November 1981. It was used as anti-sub and patrol aircraft from homebase Valkenburg. Usually 1 aircraft was based in Kevlavik (Iceland) for reconnaissance of the Soviet fleet. At Hato (Curacao), it wasn't an unusual sight to see 3 aircraft, which were used in the war against drugs. Due to budget cuts, the squadron was disbanded and homebase Valkenburg was closed. '300' entered service in November 1981 and was retired in March 2005. Sold to Portugal and became 14807. From Oostende (EBOS) to Tønder (EKTD). Built in 1972 as D-KCIL and exported to Denmark in October 1979 as OY-XKC. The registration was cancelled in June 2002, when the aircraft was exported the UK as G-CBPC. The registration was cancelled by the CAA in July 2017, but the aircraft was reregistered with the same registration in September 2018, to an Englishman in Spain. Arrived from Herning (EKHG) the day before. The Valmet L-70 Vinka was a Finnish-designed military basic trainer of the 1970's. 30 aircraft were built for the Finnish Air Force in the 1980's, with deliveries between October 1980 and 1982. Valmet attempted to market the type internationally under the name L-70 Miltrainer, but no orders followed. A turboprop version was built, with the prototype (OH-VBB) flying in February 1985. Unfortunately the aircraft was destroyed in an accident in April 1985. Judging the above info, it seems likely that OH-VAA was the prototype/demonstrator for the L-70.

The accompanying text reads: "Delivery of the first 747SP for Pan Am On the first flight from Seattle (KSEA) to New York, the aircraft already transported cargo. In this photo you can see 2 other 747SP's being prepared for delivery; the second aircraft for Pan Am (N532PA), the first 747SP for Iran Air (EP-IAA) and the first 747SP for South African (ZS-SPD). At that time, 17 747SP's were ordered." Amusingly the text calls this aircraft the '747SP Junior Jumbo'. Delivered to United in February 1986 as N143UA. Withdrawn from use in August 1995, scrapped at Ardmore (KADM) late 1997/early 1998.

Built by Koolhoven (together with G-AAGC) as production examples for Desoutter, who acquired the license for the production of FK.41's in England. both aircrat were fitted with a Cirrus Hermes I, just like the Desoutter-built aircraft would have. G-AALI was the third Dutch-built F.K.41, arriving in the UK in August 1929. It featured the lowered tailplane and an additional fin area. Exported to Australia in October 1930, where it became VH-ULX. The aircraft was reverted to the high-set tailplane and acquired a heavy duty undercarriage. Photo from Harm Reinders

Withdrawn from use in 1947 and sold to KHT Flyhklubb on October 10, 1949 as SE-BHX. Sold to a German owner in 1963 or 1964 and the SE-BHX was cancelled on October 6, 1964. In 1997, D-ECCI made a somewhat succesful ditch (no loss of life) in the sea near of Duinkerken, France. The airframe was rebuilt at Hoogeveen airport. Photo from Harm Reinders

On May 10, 1990 the aircraft was performing a familiarisation flight with 3 occupants. At some point, they were doing what seemed like (very) steep turns, where the aircraft kept ended up lower and lower. During the last manoeuver, the aircraft didn't have the height for a timely recovery and the aircraft crashed on the Westbank of the Reitdiep, near Aduardzijl. Spilled fuel caught fire and the aircraft burned down. The 3 occupants sadly lost their lives in the event. Photo from Harm Reinders

An overview of Eelde during the official opening. On the left, you have some tents and aircraft, which are better seen in my other photo. It would appear that that area was for pilots, crew and people of status. On the right, it would appear that a more general viewing area was created. Unfortunately the original is a bit blurry and I'm unable to read the registrations. Even though unidentifyable, a bunch of Air Force Fokkers can be seen. The opening was celebrated with an airshow, which attracted 40.000 visitors. Photo from Gert van Lingen

The official opening of Eelde. PH-AEB is a Fokker F.VIIa of the KLM. Amongst the other visible aircraft are PH-AKA (Pander EF 85 c/n 27), PH-AFX (Pander EF 85, c/n 38), PH-AFM (Pander EG 100, c/n 33), D-1212, D-746 and D-1668. I'm unsure of the identity of the remaining 4 aircraft. A special mention for the PH-AEV, a Pander EC 60 (c/n 25/II) that was owned by Hajo Hindriks. He is considered the founder of the airport, as he initiated the creation of the airport. Sadly, he lost his life as a result of a crash about 2 weeks after the airfield opened. The aircraft began its life in September 1963 and was delivered to Northwest in October 1963 as N734US. To Olympic Airways on June 28, 1972. Withdrawn from use in Athens in January 1980 and eventually scrapped in 1985. If anyone happens to know the airport where this photo was taken, I'd love to hear! Photo from Boeing
