Al Bayer in the XA-6 helicopter. A compressor fed air to pulse-jet engines mounted on the rotor tips. A further development was the XA-8 Jet Jeep, military designation XH-26. The American Helicopter Company was based in Manhattan Beach, California. Photo courtesy of CW Bayer who wrote the interesting online book Flying Without Instruction about his father's work.

Difficult to read, the reg looks more like N739A than N738A and, while the latter was an S-55, it does not seem to have served with LA Airways. The 1950s LAX tower is seen and, together with the tail of Convair 880 N826TW which shows in the original photo, probably dates the photo in mid-1961 before the modern airport west of Sepulveda Boulevard opened. N739A was returned to Sikorsky in 1963 and sold to the Argentine navy. Photo from: Greg Gayden

This bomber had a typical short career. Built by Douglas at Long Beach, it was delivered to Denver on 7 August 1943, and assigned to 365th BS at RAF Chelveston on 16 September. Shot up by Luftwaffe fighters while returning from raid against Bremen on 8 October and crash-landed in the Noordoostpolder, an area then just reclaimed from the sea. The crew survived.

A development of the Ha 139 retaining the seaplane's inverted gull wing, the BV 142 first flew on 11 October 1938. Like the Ha 139 it was intended as a long-range mailplane, in particular for Lufthansa's Stuttgart - Natal route. The four prototypes built were used for transport and maritime reconnaissance missions after the outbreak of the war, but found to be of little military value.
