The Stansted Carvair assembly line was shut down in 1967. Three Southend-built unused nose sections remained there along with unsold Carvair no. 17 LX-IOF (which subsequently became G-AXAI). The three nose sections were brought back to Southend where one was used in the conversion of C-54E VH-INM as Carvair no. 21, the final one built. The subject of this photo is nose section no. 22 or 23 on the dump at Southend over 4 years later.

Had been returned to ATEL for maintenance in November 1971 and seen here minus engines, outer wings & tail surfaces. It was removed from storage on 18th December 1972 and brought back into service at considerable expense to re-enter service with BAF on 27th May 1973, named "Big Bill". Sold in June 1976 to SOACO as TR-LWP. Broken up at Brazzaville in 1986.

One of these, HI-168, crashed after take off from Miami in June 1969 and the other, HI-172 was dismantled at Santo Domingo in November 1978 and moved to the Hotel Embajador in Santo Domingo, originally for use as a restaurant but later became a Piano Bar and Disco.
