Highlighting the bizarre wing planform of the Thunderceptor. Other shots cleary show that this is the second example, 46-681. Photo date given as June 1952, but this is not possible, since 46-681 was badly damaged in a take-off accident in the summer of 1951. It was rebuilt, but with a V-tail. Photo by: Loomis Dean / Life

Two demobbed C-54B Skymasters and a Pan Am Constellation. NC30064, ex 44-9010, was reportedly named Cargoliner Chesapeake Bay, but seems to be in the passenger business here. The Northwest Airlines example appears to be NC95416, ex 44-9018. Pan Am took delivery of 22 L-049s in the first five months of 1946. Photo by: Herbert Gehr / Life

Designed by Alberto Jona, the J.6 prototype had a tilting upper wing for lateral stability, automatically deflecting the ailerons to restore it to the neutral position. The rate of tilt was limited by a pair of telescopic struts, which could be locked to allow aerobatics. The central hinge as seen here was changed before the aircraft first flew on 24 May 1936. It was later flown by Leonardo Bonzi as I-BONZ. Six J.6S trainers without tilting wing were delivered to the Italian air force. Photo from: Fondazione Fiera Milano

The USAF had one fighter squadron based at Thule between 1953 and 1965 - successively the 318th and 74th FIS, flying the same F-94B Starfires, and from 1958 the 327th and 332nd FIS, flying F-102 Delta Daggers. The fate of 50-848 is unrecorded; did it never return to the USA? Photo by: George Silk / Life

The Square-T tail marking identifies the unit as the 2nd Bombardment Wing, then based at Hunter AFB, Georgia. The unit was deployed to RAF Mildenhall, UK from May to September, 1951, so the aircraft in the photo are undoubtedly enroute to the UK. In 1951 what was to be Thule AB was still under construction and was in Top Secret status. It was officially revealed and named in 1953, and was known as Thule AB until the name was changed in April, 2023. Photo by: Margaret Bourke-White / Life

Data for the radial-engined fighter behind the Fiat G.18 propeller. The CR.40 was developed alongside the CR.32, displayed on the right. The pilot had a superior field of view over the low-set upper wing. Despite this, only two CR.40s were built. The Fiat A.59-powered CR.40bis was slower than the original prototype with an imported Bristol Mercury engine. The other aircraft, clockwise from the left: IMAM Ro.37; Savoia-Marchetti SM.81 Pipistrello; S.73, I-ENNA; and Jona J.6 prototype with tilting upper wing, MM313. Photo from: Fondazione Fiera Milano

With no US register in place, the US Post Office assigned its own aircraft serials and many DH.4s were in the 60 to 110 range. The name Ak-Sar-Ben is Nebraska reversed; this airfield was funded by the so-called Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben. Photo dated 'circa 1927' by the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum, but in fact the mail service moved to Fort Crook in 1924. The first mailplane, DH.4 No 105, arrived at Ak-Sar-Ben Field from Chicago on 5 January 1920. At that time the hangar carried a smaller sign saying 'Post Office Dept'.
