A Finnish engineer Boris Adaridi designed the single-seat Adaridi AD 3 low-power aircraft and it was built at the Santahamina Aviation Wharf. The maiden flight was on April 17th, 1924. VL Pyry is a two-seat fighter trainer designed and built by the State Aircraft Factory at Tampere. The first flight of the prototype took place on March 29th 1939. 40 Pyrys were built 1939-1941. The Finnish Air Force acquired four SM-1s in 1961. They served until 1966. The Border Guard has one Mil Mi-1M and two SM-1S/600s in service 1960-1968. VL Sääski II is a twin-seat biplane for training purposes. Osakeyhtiö Sääski offered Sääski II to the Defence Ministry. Due to the delay in Blackburn Ripon building on licence, the Minister of Defence ordered 10 Sääski IIs from the State Aircraft Factory in 1929. Later the Finnish Air Force ordered 22 Sääksi IIs more. SÄ-122 belongs to the first delivery slot and it served from 1930 to 1936. All VL Sääski IIs were grounded before September 1942. The maiden flight of the German Hansa Brandenburg W.33 float monoplane was in October 1918. Only seven aircraft were delivered before end of the WWI. The Finnish Air Force bought the licence to build W.33s in May 1921. The State Aircraft Factory built 120 I.V.L. A 22 Hansas. Two of them were sold to Latvia. The Finnish Air Force used aircraft as a reconnaissance aircraft, a bomber and a trainer until 1935. The aircraft is only one of the type remaining in the world. Valmet developed all-metal Vihuri at the beginning of the 1950s to substitute VL Pyry advanced trainers. A total of 51 Vihuris were produced 1951-1957. It was the main advanced trainer and the most flown type during the 1950s. It was involved in a number of accidents. That led to a press campaign which quickened its withdrawal from service in 1959. Most of the Vihuris were scrapped in 1960. The cabin part of the VH-25 was found from a scrap yard in Helsinki at the beginning of the 1970s. The Finnish Air Force purchased nine two-seat de Havilland D.H.115 Vampire Trainer Mk.55 jet trainers in 1955. The aircraft type was the first jet trainer in Finland as well as the first aircraft type equipped with ejection seats. This is a D-Day veteran (US serial 43-15094, glider towing mission on 7 June 1944 to Sainte-Mère-Église, Normandy) that entered service with the Finnish Air Force 1961. It later was converted to BT-67 (with turbo props) and became C-FMKB. In 2020, this aircraft was still being used to fly scientists back and forth across Antarctica.

The young engineers of the State Aircraft Factory started the design work of VL Tuisku as a hobby. The Defence Ministry ordered the prototype 1933. The prototype took air first time 1934 but destroyed same year in dive test due to aeroelastic flutter. A new prototype delivered 1935. The VL Tuisku II was proven successful and the State Aircraft Factory build 28 VL Tuisku IIs. The aircraft were delivered 1936-1937 and was used as a versatile trainer until 1950. The Finnish Air Force bought the aircraft in 1929 and ordered nine more. Later the State Aircraft Factory (Valtion lentokonetehdas, VL) built under licence 29 Letov S.218s in three lots. The aircraft were delivered 1933-1936. The Finnish Air Force used S.218 as a trainer until 1945. Six S.218 were solt to civilian use. The last civilian one was in use until 1957.
