Intended for the US Navy, this aircraft ditched into Long Island Sound during a pre-delivery test flight from the Grumman factory. The remains were acquired by the RAN FAA as a training aid and shipped to Australia in 1966. While unloading, the aircraft was dropped into Sydney Harbour! The aircraft was cut up and trucked to Nowra where the nose section survives in fake VC851 markings as a "kids' simulator" in the RAN FAA Museum.

This Firefly was delivered to the Royal Navy on 30 June 1950. A couple of years later it was refurbished by Fairey for delivery by sea to the Royal Australian Navy, arriving in Australia in March 1953. In 1961 it was converted to a TT.6 by Brain & Brown at Avalon. After operational use the aircraft was allotted to the Naval Aviation Museum, Nowra where it was eventually restored to airworthy condition, being civil registered as VH-NVU(1) on 30 September 1986. Engine trouble resulted in a short life and the civil registration was cancelled on 31 January 2020.

This Sea Vampire is not what it seems! It is really XG770, a British-built aircraft delivered to the RAN in August 1959. After navy service it was sold to a gentleman who gifted it to the Australian War Memorial. With no wartime service, the AWM didn't take delivery of the aircraft and it was subsequently given to the FAA Museum. At various times it has been displayed wearing its own serial, XA101 and, currently, XG766.

Helicopters were a rare sight in New Zealand when the HMAS Sydney visited Wellington in May 1955. The first New Zealand owned helicopter, a civil Hiller UH-12, had flown only four months earlier. The Sycamore from 723 Squadron put on a demonstration at Basin Reserve, which is Wellingon's cricket ground. XD656 experienced engine trouble and was forced to ditch into the sea near the submarine HMS Telemachus on November 21, 1957. Photo from: Evening Post/ Alexander Turnbull Library
