VH-AXL was fitted with two small porthole windows either side of the cabin when delivered to QEA. It had been an ambulance aircraft with the RAAF and was sold to the Flying Doctor Service. AXL was operated by Connellan Airways with these portholes but it is not known if they were installed by the RAAF or by Connellan postwar. Qantas refitted the standard DH84 glasshouse and sent the aircraft to Papua New Guinea. It crashed there at Karanka on September 21, 1951. Note the Qantas hangar still has its wartime camouflage. While operating a scheduled airline service from Wau to Bulolo and Lae, VH-EBQ crashed in Huon Gulf, 4 miles south of Lae Aerodrome while attempting to land at Lae in low cloud and rain. Originally thought to be due to VFR flight into bad weather, the centre propeller (seen here) was subsequently found to have shed a blade in flight and torn the engine out of its mounts, causing the pilot to lose control.

While operating a scheduled airline service from Wau to Bulolo and Lae, VH-EBQ crashed in Huon Gulf, 4 miles south of Lae Aerodrome while attempting to land at Lae in low cloud and rain. Originally thought to be due to VFR flight into bad weather, the centre propeller was subsequently found to have shed a blade in flight and torn the engine out of its mounts, causing the pilot to lose control.

Used to connect Australia with Sri Lanka during World War II. Known as the Double Sunrise service as the sun rose twice during the non-stop flights that lasted up to 32 hours. G-AGID scuttled near Rottnest Island on January 30, 1946. When explosives failed to sink it, gun fire was used. G-AGID had flown to its final resting place because a bridge prevented it being towed there. That meant making it airworthy again for its final flight. The Catalinas has been retired when Liberators took over the route. Photo from: Hudson Fysh Collection/ State Library of New South Wales

Provided by the RAF during World War II for Qantas to operate non-stop flights between Australia and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). At the end of the war, the RAF ordered G-AGFM scuttled, not scrapped. A bridge over the Swan River prevented it being towed to sea. So the RAF ordered the aircraft by made airworthy again. On February 26, 1946 it was flown to the sea near Rottnest Island where it was sunk with explosives. Except for a wingtip float which had detached and drifted off. It had to be dispatched with a tomahawk. Photo from: Hudson Fysh Collection/State Library of New South Wales

VH-ABF over Brisbane where Qantas was headquartered at the time. When air services between Australia on the one side and the UK and Africa on the other were cut during World War II, Cooee was unable to get home. Likewise, BOAC's G-AFPZ was trapped on the Australian side, so a swap was arranged. -ABF became G-AFBL in July 1942 and continued with BOAC until scrapped in 1947. VH-USG was being delivered to Qantas when it crashed soon after departing Longreach killing the three crew and one passenger. As can be seen in the photo, the fin had failed. The problem was a defective fin-trim mechanism and similar faults were found in the rest of the Qantas DH86 fleet. Poor quality control at DH to blame. -USG was neither registered in the UK nor Australia at the time but was being ferried on a UK Certificate of Airworthiness.
