Scaled down from the big F.XXXVI (F.36), the 22-passenger F.XXII was the last airliner produced by the Fokker company before WWII. It was still of mixed construction with fixed landing gear and only four examples were built. Roerdomp (bittern) became G-AFXR and HM159 as a navigation trainer in the RAF. By 1943 it was used in a transport capacity by No 1680 Flight. It crashed into Loch Tarbert on 3 July 1943, killing all 20 people on board. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

Seating up to 20 passengers the F.IX was Fokker's largest trimotor airliner. There was little wrong with the design but its appearance coincided with the Great Depression and only two examples were built for KLM. KLM's first own aircraft were Fokkers but four DH.9Bs were added in 1921. These converted bombers could carry two passengers. Researcher Herman Dekker notes that construction number H9187 is unconfirmed. The aircraft might be ex G-EAUQ (H9125) instead of G-EAUO (H9187). Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

The F.III was a notable early airliner of which some 66 examples were built. Uniquely the pilot sat alongside the slightly offset engine, 'burning on one side and freezing on the other'. Used by then for sightseeing flights, this airframe was lost on 24 July 1928 here at Rotterdam when the pilot made too short a take-off run, hit a ship's masts and crashed into the Waalhaven harbour. One of the passengers drowned. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

This magnificent 1928 built aircraft is part of the wonderful Aviodrome Museum at Lelystad. It is the former OY-ASE, ex SE-ASE ex OY-DED ex CH-159. It was given a four second exposure at f.8 and a flash was open-fired towards the tail once the shutter was open. Many thanks to all of the staff at the Aviodrome.
