This VF-24 was photographed in August 1987 during its landing at homebase NAS Miramar (CA). The Fighting Renegades transitioned from F-8 Crusader to the F-14A Tomcat and received their first aircraft on 9 December 1975 and swapped the Alpha for Bravo's in April 1989. The squadron was eventually disestablished on 31 August 1996.

A Fighter Squadron 24 "Checkertails" F-14A during a steep approach to homebase NAS Miramar (CA). The VF-24 bird (F-14A-Block 85-GR) was the 15th F-14A that was remanufactured to F-14D, as a result it received the designation F-14D(R). The Tomcat was stricken with VF-31 on 13 January 1995 when it was involved in a mid-air collision with F-14D 164340 over the Pacific Ocean, south of San Diego. The crew was rescued by a SH-60F from HS-8 and a nearby operating US Marine Corps CH-53E.

This F-14A of Fighter Squadron (VF) 191 Satan's Kittens was seen during an enthusiastic landing at NAS Miramar. VF-191 and sister squadron VF-194 Red Lightnings were the two shortest lived F-14 squadrons in history and thus are rarely photographed. VF-191 was established on 4 Dec'86. Its pilots were trained by VF-124 and being prepared for a deployment onboard the USS Independence as part of CVW-10. After the FRS training, the squadron received its first Tomcats (mid '87). The squadron was disbanded before the cruise could ever take place, on 30 April 1988.

The Naval Fighter Weapons School (NFWS) Top Gun operated also Skyhawks with Marines titels as their opponents were not only coming from the US Navy. The desert colored A-4F is seen in close formation with a green colored NFWS A-4E. The E and F are colsely related to eachother, the F can be distinguished by the lack of a pitot tube on the tail.

A three-tone brown/two tone green colorscheme, the painters did a great job on this adversary Skyhawk of Fighter Squadron (VF) 126 Bandits. The squadron was based at Naval Air Station Miramar (CA) and supported the Pacific Fleet in their adversary needs. Fighter ONE TWO SIX was disestablished on 1 April 1994. This particular Hot Rod, as the Skyhawk was nick-named, crashed in the Pacific off coast California due to an engine failure on 6 May 1992, only weeks before it was planned to retire for service.

This F9F was delivered to the US Navy during October 1950 and assigned to VF-721 aboard USS Boxer where it then saw action in the skies over Korea. It then served with VF-821, VF-51 and various training units before retirement in 1956 with 1,575 hours. Now on display at the Flying Leathernecks Museum in the colours of a VF-311 aircraft flown by Capt. W.A. Bloomer, who years later would become instrumental in helping to establish the museum.

This Avenger was TOC by the USN during June 45 but too late to see combat in the Pacific. Instead it spent its service life in various training units before being retired in 1962. It then served as a fire bomber until 1988 before being acquired by the Marine Corps museum. It is now on display at the Flying Leathernecks museum in the colours of VMTB-132 aboard USS Cape Gloucester in the East China Sea during July 1945. The side-on shot is all wing so I chose this angle for more detail.
