The Avro 652 was the precursor of the Anson. Only two examples were built. Imperial Airways used them mostly to fly express mail to their seaplane station in Brindisi, until the Empire flying boats entered service. They were then sold to Air Service Training Ltd and impressed in 1941, G-ACRN becoming DG656. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

'First regular airmail service to Australia'. Imperial Airways schedules were always complicated - the HP.45 flew to Karachi and an AW.15 Atalanta continued to Darwin. As there was too much demand for the inaugural flight, the public were fooled: Hengist actually carried mail for India while letters for Australia had been dispatched via the old route to Karachi which involved a train between Paris and Brindisi. Even when transported entirely by air, the mail still took almost two weeks from London to Sydney.

Incorporating Wibault construction techniques, the Viastra twelve-passenger airliner first flew in 1930. A small number were built, with one, two or three engines. The single Viastra X with two Pegasus radials and a seven-seat interior was built for the Prince of Wales. Still unpainted here, it was later red and gold. Replaced by the red and blue Dragon Rapide G-ADDD, G-ACCC ended up with the RAF as L6102 and was broken up in 1937. Also reported as c/n 1. Photo from: Dan Shumaker collection

This Heron is the former G-ANUO, which was last operated by Topflight and Avtech in the 1980s and 1990s. Its registration was cancelled from the register on 8 Aug 1996, and a few months later, in Nov 1996, it was placed on display as seen here, in front of the former Croydon Airport's terminal building. It is falsely painted as G-AOXL of Morton Air Services, the last aircraft to make a passenger flight from Croydon Airport on 30 Oct 1959. By late 2020 the aircraft was still on display here in much the same condition. The real G-AOXL was sold to Norway in 1971.
