Siskin fighters lined up at Hendon. First row, J8950, J8664, J8662, J8056, J8666, J8668, J8670 of No 29 Sqn. In second row is J8836 of No 43 Sqn. On No 29 Sqn's previous equipment, the Gloster Grebe, the squadron marking was four crosses. On the Siskin this was shortened to three. Thus the origin of this marking is not a mispaint of a Roman numeral XXIX. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

The sole surviving complete Typhoon on display at RAFM Hendon. With the covers off, one gets a good look at the Napier Sabre 24-cylinder engine, the propeller and a view of the open gun bay doors for the four 20mm Hispano cannon. Good at low level, the "Tiffy" was deadly as a fighter-bomber, armed with two 500 kg. bombs or eight RP-3 rockets. No. 609 Sqn under S/L Beamont flew the first Rhubarb mission in Nov 1942. By D-Day as many as 18 Typhoon squadrons equipped 2nd TAF, wreaking havoc on ground targets in the weeks that followed.

On display at RAFM Hendon. It was one of 18 aircraft to be financed by the Nizam of Hyderabad. Being the 13th aircraft, it was numbered 12A and allotted to No. 110 (Hyderabad) Sqn. The Sqn moved to France in Aug 1918 as a day bomber unit. While attacking a German town, F1010 was force landed behind enemy lines on 5 Oct 1918. In 1936 the DH9 was displayed in a museum in Berlin, which was heavily damaged in Nov 1943 in a RAF night raid. The remaining aircraft were sent to Czarnkow, which captured by Polish forces in 1945. The DH9 was exchanged for a Spitfire during the Cold War.

Rare dual-control Fw-190 trainer on display in the Bomber Hall at RAF Museum Hendon. It was constructed as a ground-attack F-8, then converted to an S-8. It wears the coat of arms of Nürnberg as the emblem of I./JG 54 "Grünherz". This unit was re-formed in 1939 at nearby Herzogenaurach from two Staffeln of I./JG 70. The emblem was adopted in 1941 on the Eastern Front and may have been a morale booster due to the city's connection with large NSDAP Nuremberg Rallies. It was discarded in spring 1943.

This Do 24 was on display at the RAF Museum for a number of years, having been donated by Mr Dolph Overton in 1982. It didn't fit in with Museum's collecting policy and was later placed on loan with the Militaire Luchtvaart Museum; it is now on display in Soesterberg, in Dutch markings.
