This prototype of the Fencer was initially intended to be STOL capable by including two afterburning turbojets for cruise and four turbojets for STOL performance. However this configuration proved to be impracticable and was subsequently abandoned. This plane was previously '61 blue' and is on display at the Central Museum of the Air Forces at Monino.

The MiG-27 shares the basic airframe of the MiG-23 but is optimised for air-to-ground attack. Dissatisfaction with the MiG-23BN led to the further development of the basic airframe to accommodate; a stronger undercarriage, simpler intakes, a shorter exhaust nozzle and a revised nose with a downward-sloping profile for improved pilot visibility. This example is on display at the Central Museum of the Air Forces at Monino.
