This innocuous-looking Twin Bonanza is a very rare bird indeed. One of less than 30 of the ultimate model built, this aircraft went to the US Army in 1966 as the one and only NU-8E for testing with serial 66-15360. Civilianised, it became N1779G before coming to Australia in April 2004.

The rather spartan instrument panel of this homebuilt gyro has everything you need. At the top is a portable GPS & note the safety lanyard tying it on! Below is a liquid compass, VSI, ASI & altimeter, and below them are temperature gauges, the engine instruments and, at bottom, a stopwatch and hourmeter. A box on the left of the pilot's seat (out of frame) contains the throttle, mag switches and a hand-held VHF radio. Not much protection for the pilot though - no wonder they wear freezer suits!

One of the best strips around Melbourne - looking down the 4,500 ft runway 18 with the town of Sunbury at upper left. Note the Sting crossing the intersection with 4,000 ft runway 12/30. Since there are a lot of ultralights based here contra-circuits are in use with ultralights to the East and GA to the West.

'The Amy Grace' started life as a J-5BG Cirrus Autocar. Shipped, new, to Robby's Aircraft Co., Parafield, & registered VH-RAD on 16 Aug 55. In 59 changed hands to Air Charter Ltd before re-registered as VH-WWB to Commodore Aviation, Port Lincoln, SA on 13 Mar 62. Unfortunately, crashed at Port Lincoln on 21 Feb 65. After many years dormant, restored incorporating a 180 hp Lycoming O-360 conversion, returning to Register on 8 Jan 90. Just completed another expensive restoration at Redcliffe, Qld.

Typical of the second generation of ultralight aircraft is this FUM Javelin, dating from the late 1980s. This one has a double-skin wing, but the first aircraft I ever owned was a Javelin with a single-skin wing. Talk about drag! This one also illustrates the rule whereby 95.10 category aircraft only need to display the aircraft's individual registration number without the '10' prefix or leading zeros.
