In 1957, Max Ward bought this sturdy Bristol for his airline based in Yellowknife, to attract freight business from mining and oil companies. The Freighter later made history by being the first wheeled aircraft to land at the North Pole, around 4am on May 6, 1967 flying out of Alert in support of a scientific expedition. The following year, it was donated to the city and made into a momument near the eastern end of the airport, honoring Canadian bush pilots.

Delivered to the USAAF as 44-61071, put into storage in India after the war, then flew with operators from Venezuela, Panama and the Dominican Republic from 1955 until withdrawal from use in 1976. Resurrected to fly with several Canadian airlines and with Buffalo since 2001. Its belly-landing in Déline on September 25, 2015 was no mean feat as the crew managed to get a crippled freighter onto a gravel airstrip without navaids, in solid IFR weather.

Was leased to Lufthansa as such for five years, hence the crane that is still on the nose. To Canada in 1988 for Air Manitoba and with Buffalo since 1995. Seriously damaged during taxi in 2005 but rebuilt and meanwhile still active at 75.
