This F-100D, the fighter-bomber version, is a Cuban Misssile Crisis and Vietnam veteran. The aircaft is on display at the Udvay-Hazy Center as it was painted flying from Bien Hoa AB during the heaviest fighting of the Tet Offensive during 1968 when it flew for the 90th TFS/ 3rd TFW.

This Helldiver was built in May 1945 but the war ended before it saw any combat. It served with VB-92 aboard the USS Lexington, flying in the western Pacific and occupied Japan. It was retired in 1948 and entered the Smithsonian National Air Museum collection in 1960 and is now on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center..

This shot needed a loooong time waiting for the large floor area to be free of people - finally! This P-26 was operated by the Army Air Corps from 1934 until being transferred to the Panama Canal Department Air Force in 1938. It was given to Guatemala in 1942 and flew in their AF until 1954 and subsequent donation to the Smithsonian NASM in 1957.

This is the only Do 335 extant and the second A-0 built, finally becoming a quite stunning exhibit at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the Smithsonian NASM. I was completely taken aback by the huge dimensions of this aircraft, apparent when comparing the relative size of the Pfeil with the Arado Ar-234 behind.

No Seiran (Clear sky Storm) ever saw combat but was intended to fulfill the requirement for a bomber that could operate from a submarine to strike directly at the US and strategic targets such as the Panama Canal. This is the last built as well as the only surviving airframe and is now on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

The Spad XVI was a two-seat version of the very successful single-seat Spad fighters of WWI. An otherwise undistinguished aircraft, this Spad XVI on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center is significant because of it's association with Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell. Six Spad XVIs were acquired from the French in August 1918 and this one became Mitchell's personal aircraft.

The Ohka 11 was required to be launched within 37 km (23 mi) of the target, making them very vulnerable to defending fighters. The Model 22 was designed to overcome the short standoff distance problem by using a thermojet engine, the Tsu-11. This engine was successfully tested and 50 Ohka 22s were built but never used operationally. This is the only surviving example (marked '59' aft of the blossom) and is on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

The Northrop Model 1 Mockup Flying Wing was Northrop's natural progression towards an aerodynamically clean design in which the drag caused by protruding engine nacelles, fuselage and vertical and horizontal tail surfaces is eliminated. However, the N-1M was plagued by poor performance as it was both overweight and underpowered. Nevertheless, Northrop convinced the AF that the N-1 M was successful enough to serve as the forerunner of more advanced flying wings and led ultimately to the B-2 bomber.

The operational history of this Komet, on display in unrestored condition at the Udvar-Hazy Center, is unknown. It was one of five brought to the US after WWII for evaluation, receiving the foreign equipment code FE-500 that is still visible. Gliding tests were completed but powered tests were abandoned after delamination of the aircraft's wooden wings was discovered. It was then stored at Norton AFB until 1954 when it was transferred to the Smithsonian. Note the Walter rocket motor in the foreground

This was officially accepted in May, 1942 and although not the first helicopter to see military service, the XR-4 was the first mass-produced helicopter and the first successful production rotorcraft of single-rotor configuration. The XR-4C came to the Smithsonian Institution in 1947 as part of a larger gift of aircraft transferred from the USAF to the new National Air Museum. It is now on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center.

In 1938 this G-22 was shipped to Europe for an aerobactic demonstration tour, during which the famous German WWI ace Ernst Udet became only the sceond person ever to fly the Gulfhawk II when he piloted it over Germany. In exchange, the usual pilot, Major Al. Williams became the first American to fly the Bf-109. The G-22 is now on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center.
