This is the second Do 335 A-0 built and is now a stunning exhibit at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the Smithsonian NASM. Allied forces found the Do-335 when they overran Oberpfaffenhofen airfield on 29th April 1945. After VE Day it was shipped to the USA aboard the British aircraft carrier HMS Reaper, along with other captured German aircraft and equipment for technology evaluation. Following USN testing from 1945-48 the Navy transferred the Pfeil (Arrow) to the museum's collection in 1961

This Lysander is one of 225 Mk. IIIs built in Canada during 1942. It served with the RCAF as 2346, most probably as a target tug or communication aircraft. This example was discovered in a farmer's field in Edmonton, Alberta, during the early 1970s but has been beautifully restored and is now on display in RAF 138 Squadron markings. During WWII this squadron was based at Tempsford flying clandestine missions for the SOE supplying resistance forces and transporting agents to and from occupied Europe.

Larry Bell envisioned a thriving market for personal helicopters would emerge after WWII and to be part of it he created the Bell 30 Ship 1A. It proved that a practical personal helicopter was feasible and it led directly to the Bell Model 47. This is just one of many ground-breaking exhibits on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

The PA-18 Super Cub was a strengthened, modification of the original J-3 Cub. The Atomic Energy Commission operated this PA-18 in its uranium exploration program carried out in the Western US during the 1950s. The AEC was the sole owner of N1872P during its operational life but in Feb. 1961, after 1,487 hours of flight time, it was retired and is now on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

One of the most famous of all US aircraft is the Curtiss JN-4D Jenny, with more than 90% of American pilots during WWI receiving their primary instruction on the type. This example, one the first 25 of 585 built under licence by the Springfield Aircraft Corporation of Springfield, MA is on display at the Smithsonian NASM's Udvar-Hazy Center. It had been briefly in use as a US Air Service trainer at Hazelhurst Field at Mineola, NY before being acquired by the museum in Nov. 1918.

On March 7-8, 1949, 'Waikiki Beach' set a light-plane, nonstop distance record by flying from Honolulu, Hawaii to Teterboro, New Jersey. That is a distance of 4215 nautical miles, which is 315 nm more than the range of Concorde in the background! With "Department of Commerce" badge on rear fuselage. On 2nd October 1936, test pilot James G. Ray landed the AC-35 in a downtown park in Washington DC where it went on display. Later that month the aircraft was converted to drivable configuration by folding back the rotor blades over the fuselage, the propeller disengaged, the tailwheel put in gear and the front wheels used for steering. Ray then drove it through Washington to much acclaim to be handed over to the Aeronautics Branch at the main entrance of the Commerce Building.

The WWII service record of this P-51 was uneventful but post-war it was modified for long-distance flights and renamed 'Excaliber III'. It set many distance records including a 10.5 hour flight from Norway across the North Pole to Alaska. It is now on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

With this PV-2, Frank Piasecki became the second American to successfully fly a helicopter of his own design. Subsequently, the company to which he gave his name went on to produce many superb large helicopters. The PV-2 is now on display at the wonderful NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

This aircraft was acquired after WWII by George Bogardus, who named her 'Little Gee Bee' and flew her from Oregon to Washington DC in 1947, 1949 and 1951. These three flights helped to convince officials in the CAA and the CAB that amateurs could design and build light aircraft that were safe, reliable, and capable of practical cross-country flights. Legislation was passed in 1952 that sanctioned the registration and operation of amateur-built aircraft, leading on to the founding of the EAA.

This Ag-Cat rolled out of the factory in May, 1963. In 1974 it underwent conversion to a Super Ag-Cat by the installation of a 600 hp engine and a 300 gallon hopper. Although N322Y has 12,778 flight hours in the logbook it now flies high in retirement at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.
