Assumed to be one of the two Ca.44s built by Standard Aircraft for the US. Navy. In the photo it was being used to test the sea sled as a platform to launch bombers at sea. The sled would support the bomber until it reached flying speed. There was only one attempt, on the day of the photo. When the Caproni failed to fly the project was cancelled as no longer required following the end of World War I. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland

One version of the Lanzius LII story says the aircraft in the photo is the Packard powered prototype of a fighter with a variable-incidence wing. It crashed but four more were ordered by the US Army in April 1918 with Liberty engines. After the first Liberty powered one (serial 40034) lost its wings the rest were cancelled. The other version is this is 40034 and a note with the photo does say this aircraft lost its wings. It might be the prototype that became 40034 when it was re-engined and handed to the Army. The W-1A was a developed version of the Weick W-1, a homebuilt design intended to fit with the 'safety plane' program of the early 1930s. The original was sold to NACA who, after wind tunnel testing in their Langley facility wind tunnel, contracted for a new version as the W-1A. This new variant replaced the fixed slot forward of the wing used on the original aircraft with large trailing edge flaps. Photo from the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics.
