Another aircraft type designed for the 1934 Challenge International de Tourisme, the four-seat Kl 36 was the fastest ever Klemm aircraft, but none of the four participating Kl 36As completed the Challenge's 9537.4 km rally through Europe. They were powered by either an Argus As 17, as seen here, or a Hirth HM 8 engine. For some reason, three of them had this braced landing gear which looks like a hasty improvisation. Royal Aircraft Factory S.E. 2a see here at Farnborough in late 1914 early 1915 showing the tail code of 609. The SE 2a evolved from the B.S. 1 which crashed on 27th March 1914 due to the design of the small rudder injuring Geoffrey de Havilland the pilot. The aircraft was rebuilt with triangular fins and a larger rudder, it was initially designated B.S. 2 but it was soon redesignated S.E. 2. The aircraft was again rebuilt in April 1914 under the supervision of Henry Folland and became S.E. 2a. The aircraft saw service in WW1 with number 5 Sqn and 3 Sqn. From my collection.

PS stood for Pallavicino Sportivo - the PS.1 was created for the 1934 Challenge International de Tourisme by Cesare Pallavicino at Caproni's CAB works in Bergamo. The landing gear was retractable. Two airframes were built. I-MELO was damaged during the Challenge's fuel consumption trial. I-FRAN (c/n 2) ended 18th in the final classification. Prototype of Polish twin-engined small regional airliner, developed by Centralne Studium Samolotów (Central Aircraft Study) in Warsaw. A single example was built and flown in 1950, but no production followed. It was the first all-metal aircraft to be built in Poland following the end of the Second World War. After the plane was scrapped in 1960, most of the plane ended up in a children's playground in Warsaw. Only the front part of the fuselage survived and in 1967 it was transferred to the collection of the Museum of Aviation and Astronautic in Krakow.

Two-seat jet bomber powered by two RR Nene engines. Rolled out on 5 March 1950. The landing gear collapsed during taxiing tests on 23 April and, after repairs, again on landing after the aircraft's first and only flight on 15 March 1951. The French defence ministry had already cancelled the type in May 1950. The sole SO.4000 ended up as a target at a shooting range near Bourges. According to some sources the type was named Vautour I. The Ariel III was the first fully jet-powered helicopter to fly. The first of two prototypes, F-WFUY first flew on 18 April 1951 and is seen here on an early test flight. Replacing the piston engine and compressor of the earlier Ariels, a Turbomeca Arrius turbine-compressor fed compressed air to burners at the rotor tips. There was now room for a third seat. The Ariel III resulted in the SO.1221 Djinn. The location seems to be Villacoublay which apparently hosted the Ariel programme, Sud-Ouest (SNCASO) having taken over the Bloch facilities here. In 1930 Ben Howard took his DGA-3 Pete to the National Air Races at Cleveland, OH. After being rebuilt as the Baker Special, the aircraft went to the Goodyear races only to be partially destroyed in a hangar fire after the races. EAA Founder Paul Proberezny used what was left of the fuselage and added cut down Luscomb wings and spring landing gear to create Pete III "Little Audry" (named after his wife). It first flew in 1953 (N27B). After six later owners, the aircraft was donated to the EAA Museum and restored to fly in 1991 before retiring for display.

Although designated Curtiss Scout, the CS was a scout and torpedo bomber designed by the US Navy's Bureau of Aeronautics. CS became SC in the Navy's post-1923 designation system. Only eight CS-1 and CS-2 aircraft, including A-6504, were built by Curtiss. 75 more SC-1s and SC-2s were built by Martin, and the design evolved into the Martin T3M. By mid-1927, the SC was only still in use with a training unit at NAS Pensacola. Photo by: Leslie Jones / Boston Public Library

I found some small album photos and thought they might be of interest. These were taken at NAS Sunnyvale (which later became NAS Moffett Field) in June 1932 and show a day when the public was allowed in to see the dirigible. For those of us that know Moffett Field it will be a shock to see nothing but a field of dry grass and weeds.
