Prototype of a 'personal helicopter' designed by Lewis McCarty and built by De Lackner Helicopters from New York. The US Army ordered a dozen examples of the DH-5 Aerocycle model. Its military designation YHO-2 was soon changed to HZ-1 in a category of its own. It was hoped that the craft could be flown by soldiers after a brief instruction, but it wasn't that easy and obviously the rotor was extremely dangerous to the pilot and bystanders alike. The Bendix Model K prototype initially flew with an uncovered fuselage and later with a fully enclosed, egg-shaped fuselage. By January 1947 it was in this form, with an open cockpit. Oddly the Model K and the larger Model J were apparently both named Whirlaway. Bendix Helicopter closed its doors in 1949. NX41817 then went to NACA for rotor research work according to a NASA document. An end date for this is not known to us. Photo from: NASA Langley

A Polish utility aircraft built in 1945 at the Lotnicze Warsztaty Doświadczalne(LWD, Aviation Experimental Workshops) in Łódź, designed by T. Sołtyk. It was the first plane built and flown in Poland after the end of World War II. Some former German components were used for construction, primarily the Bramo Sh 14 engine and pipes from crashed planes. The airframe in the photo was the only plane of this type built.

The Fairchild 45 was a five-seat executive aircraft first flown in 1935. It was comfortable and easy to fly, yet only 16 F-45A series aircraft were built. One of these, NC16365, was sold to the US Navy as a JK-1. It was used by Rear Admiral King at Anacostia and later on the American west coast at North Island and Alameda. During WWII two more F-45As were impressed as JK-1s and two by the US Army as UC-88s. Fairchild took over Kreidner-Reisner Aircraft at Hagerstown in 1929. Fairchild moved there itself in 1931 and supposedly the Kreider-Reisner name disappeared in 1934. Photo from: Smithsonian Institution

First flown on 22 September 1947, the S-53, naval designation HJS, was a bigger development of the S-51. It was a failure as the centre of gravity shifted too much with heavier payloads carried all forward of the engine, and the twin-rotor Piasecki HUP Retriever became the US Navy's new rescue helicopter instead. Sikorsky solved the problem by putting the engine in the nose of the S-55. BuNo 30370 was the second of two S-53 airframes built. Photo from: Vertical Flight Society

France produced an armada of large flying boat types. The prototype 01 of the four-engine Br 730 maritime patrol aircraft flew in April 1938 but crashed in July. This seems to be the first production machine, No 1, but confirmation is sought. No 1 was completed in Vichy French colours but not flown until December 1944 after the liberation of southern France. On one photo it seems to wear invasion stripes. This would be a later shot. The aircraft entered service as a transport, named Véga. It crashed in Arzew, Algeria in January 1949. Three more aircraft were completed, Sirius, Altair and Bellatrix, the latter two to Br 731 standard with a redesigned nose.
