The Parks P-1 was a licensed copy of the Kreider-Reisner Challenger, which itself became the Fairchild KR-34. The P-1 retained the original WWI vintage OX-5 engine and 45 P-1s were built at Cahokia, across the Mississippi from Saint Louis. Oliver Parks founded Parks Air College here in 1927. Photo dated 'circa 1929'. NC353K was registered between 1929 and 1936. Photo from: Saint Louis University

The Eagle, only retrospectively designated Model 19 by Curtiss, was a 1919 airliner with a nicely crafted fuselage seating eight people, including the one or two pilots. It was originally a trimotor. The Eagle II was a twin and the Eagle III was powered by single 400-hp Liberty engine. Only a few Eagles were built, the only customer being the US Army Air Service which bought three Eagle IIIs. Optimistically called a 'hospital ship', s/n 64243 was equipped as a four-litter ambulance, but crashed on 28 May 1921. The pilot and all six passengers were killed. The HE 8 (not He 8, E for monoplane) reconnaissance seaplane was developed for the Danish navy which gave it the HM.II designation. Six examples were bought from Heinkel in 1928 and 16 more produced by the Danish navy yard. Oddly they were numbered in reverse order so s/n 99 was the first one and 78 the last one, built in 1938 when the design was thoroughly obsolete. 87 is seen in the harbour of Nuuk in Greenland. The Vultee V-90 was designed as a heavy single-seat dive-bomber for the US Army. In 1943 the USAAF changed its role to low-level attack and then cancelled it. However, the first prototype was completed as a testbed for the 3000-hp P&W R-4360 Wasp Major engine, needed for the B-29. It first flew on 11 February 1944. Here it is seen during testing at NAS Patuxent River as the US Navy compared this aircraft to its Douglas AD Skyraider and Martin AM Mauler. Subsequently used by Pratt & Whitney as NX60373. Scrapped in 1950. Photo from: Naval History and Heritage Command

One of the last designs of the Thomas-Morse Aircraft Corporation of Ithaca, New York, the P-13 Viper fighter had pretty good performance and handling, but the Curtiss H-1640 Chieftain engine seen installed here had cooling problems that were never resolved. Prototype fitted with a Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp as P-13A by September 1930 but no production. Aircraft lost at Wright Field on 1 October 1930 after catching fire in flight. This was the first aircraft of DDL and possibly the first entry in the Danish register. It was reportedly ex German navy 3078 and ex D-380. On 7 August 1920 it flew the first DDL service from the Refshaleøen naval air station to Warnemünde via Malmö. Back to Germany after a few months as D-146 as the Allies did not approve its sale or lease to Denmark. Apparently there was a second T-DABA, ex D-43, in 1921. Photo from: Library of Congress

The Stearman X-100 bomber first flew on 16 November 1938 according to one source, powered by uncommon P&W R-2180-A Twin Hornet engines. The original nose shape has been changed to a stepped nose here. The type was rejected, but the sole prototype was acquired by the USAAC as the XA-21 attack bomber. Rudder striping abolished in 1940. VH-GNJ was withdrawn from use in 2021 after 10 years on the register. It is a 1930 American design copying the Zögling primary glider that had been developed in Germany a few years earlier. Northrop is Marvin Northrop, of Minneapolis, and not the famous aircraft designer Jack Northrop, of California. VH-GNJ was built in the early 1970s but has spent most of its existence in storage or as a museum exhibit.

A motorcycle of the air, designed by Dutchman Frits Koolhoven for British Aerial Transport and powered by an ABC Gnat aero engine of 40 hp. The sole example never carried a registration. Performance was poor and handling 'too tricky' according to Flight. The journal suggested that it drew attention mainly from women and boys at the 1920 Olympia Aero Exhibition, while men knew better. In the background is a BAT FK.26 Commercial airliner, G-EANI. Photo from: Flight

The Fa 223 Drache (dragon) was a scaled-up Fw 61. The prototype D-OCEB first flew untethered on 3 August 1940. It crashed on 5 February 1941 due to engine failure at low altitude. The type was the world's first helicopter to be ordered into production in December 1942, just before the Sikorsky R-4, but Allied air raids did a lot of damage and only some eleven Fa 223s were flown before war's end. The type could carry some four passengers, a much heavier load than other early helicopters.
