An early German pioneering aircraft from 1913 designed by Waldemar Geest. This airplane took part in the "Air Week" competition in Berlin-Johannisthal in May 1913, being the only plane of the competition to fly in very stormy weather. It is the only surviving example of the plane designed by Geest. It is displayed in an unrestored state and almost complete - only the wheels and part of the tail are missing.

Yes, this is for real. The Coléoptère (beetle) was a tail-sitting VTOL aircraft with an annular or ring wing. The airframe was built by Nord but engine maker Snecma led the project. Test pilot Auguste Morel made eight successful flights without going into horizontal mode, but ejected on the ninth and the aircraft was destroyed. On another photo it wears code Y. The Atlantic Fokker F.14 was a different aircraft from the Dutch Fokker F.XIV, having a parasol wing and cockpit aft of the cabin. The US Army placed a large order for 20 examples in 1931. These Y1C-14 aircraft were distributed over various airfields. The Y1 prefix, dropped in 1933, indicated 'funding from outside normal fiscal year procurement'. This airframe, 31-400, was fitted with the latest R-1820 Cyclone engine for evaluation at Wright Field, designated (Y1)C-14A. Dutch sources give construction number 1820. Photo from: US Air Force

Originally known as the Thomas-Morse XO-932 and first flown on 4 May 1931, it was unsuccessfully entered in a U.S. Army competition for a light observation aircraft designated Y1O-41. Engine is a 600 hp Wright GV-1570 water cooled V12. Lacking military orders it was remodeled by Consolidated Acft. for restricted use as a company transport and designated as Model 23. Here it has stopped off en route Buffalo/NY to San Diego/CA, still in Army drab paint. It was exported as XA-DBX in 1936. G & A Aircraft designed the Model 45 series of rotor-craft for the U.S. Army who designated them XR-9, -9A & -9B. These were unsuccessful but the Firestone Rubber Company bought G & A in 1943 with the intention of producing a civil version. This resulted in the Firestone Aircraft Company Model 45D shown here. It was demonstrated at the 1946 Cleveland National Races but the hoped for orders did not materialize. Photo from: William Engle via Tim Martin

Two MB.90s were to take part in the Challenge International de Tourisme in August 1932, but did not show up although the first one, first flown in June, wears the event's tail stripes and number L2 underwing here. F-AMBO was displayed at the November 1932 Paris Salon, with a Renault 4Pei engine replacing its provisional DH Gipsy. In 1933 this aircraft was converted to MB.93 standard, but the MB.90 family was unsuccessful. Photo from: Dassault

Photo data acquired from multiple sources. It can be established that this Model M was built during 1932 to 1933 and is here attending the Air Races in 1934. The print has a photo-lab date stamp of 'Sep 19 1934'. It later carried operator titles from '(illegible) Scientific Service Inc' and was named Silver Star. Photograph taken by William H Engle who later became Chief Test Pilot for the Fleetwing Sophomore (Photo ID: 40876). Photo from: William Engle (son of the photographer) via Tim Martin

Records show A6631 served less than six months and is unlikely to have left France but the photo is not at a typical operational aerodrome. Maybe the factory. . On May 1, 1917 A6631 struck an obstacle on takeoff. The pilot was able to complete the mission in the damaged aircraft but it appears to have been written off on return. The obsolete Morane-Saulnier P was withdrawn from RFC use in 1917. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand
