The F-89 was first flown in 1948 and of the production run of 1,050, 682 were the F-89D variant which could carry 104 rockets in wing pods and had a new fire-control radar and computer system. From these, 350 were modified to F-89J to carry two Genie nuclear-armed rockets and four Falcon missiles. From 1955, 53-2610 operated from Otis AFB, MA and Dover AFB, DE and after conversion to F-89J, from Wurtsmith AFB, MI and Hector Field, ND. Preserved from 1966 and rebuilt using some parts from 52-1899

This is none other than the first production Hercules, which made its maiden flight on 7th April 1955 with blunt nose. Converted to AC-130A gunship in December 1968, serving with a number of units in Vietnam and suffering combat damage. It was not until 1981 that it was modified with four-blade props. After withdrawal from duty with the 711th SOS at Duke Field in 1995, flown to Eglin for preservation in September 1996. My photo here shows it at Duke in 1979 with three-blade props

Built as a HH-53C, converted to HH-53H then to MH-53J and again to MH-53M. It crashed in November 1984 on exercise due to inflight tail rotor separation. Rebuilt and operated for a total of 34 years before the MH-53M type was retired in 2008, this one flying into the USAF Armament Museum in September that year having served the 55th ARRS at Eglin from 1976 to 1980

From 1956 this RB-47 performed secret ELINT missions over Soviet airspace with the 55th SRW from Forbes AFB, KS. Placed in storage at MASDC in December 1967, it was the last B-47 to serve. In 1968 it was sent to North American Aviation for testing by the Air Force Avionics Laboratory of the Forward Looking Advanced Multimode Radar (FLAMR) system for the F-111A. It was fitted with an F-111-type nose, operating till 1976 when retired to Eglin. The F-111 radome and stubby RB-47H nose was replaced by a standard B-47E nose, but not before I was able to capture this image in 1979

The B-57B was the most produced model of Martin's Canberra with 403 built, featuring a tandem cockpit and rotary bomb door. This one went into service c.1955 by the 345th TBG, Langley AFB but by March 1966 was deployed by the 405th TFW, Clark AFB, Philippines, for missions over Vietnam. In 1967 it transferred to 8th BS, 35th TFW at Clark, soon moving to Phan Rang, Vietnam for night intruder work. After storage from 1969 at MASDC, in 1972 it was converted to EB-57B and based at Malmstrom (MT ANG) and Burlington (VT ANG). Preserved at Tyndall AFB from 1981, moving to Barksdale and then Eglin

Served the 185th FIS at Oklahoma City, New Jersey ANG, Vermont ANG and by 1982 the ADWC then 325th FWW at Tyndall AFB. In November 1988 it was ferried the short distance to Eglin for preservation. Unfortunately shadow from the museum hangar was impinging and the styling of the serial doesn't look quite right...

This SR-71A came off the production line in standard configuration in August 1965. However it was chosen as the platform for a new set of sensor equipment to be carried in a nine-foot extension from the rear of the aircraft, the "Big Tail" as it was known flying for the first time in December 1975. It was the only aircraft so modified but the new sensors proved of little advantage. The program was dropped and the aircraft was last flown in October 1976

Painted to represent a locally-based UH-1N of the 46th Test Wing here at Eglin, this is in fact UH-1M 66-15186 (as marked in small characters on boom), which was repaired no less than six times after incidences of combat damage with the US Army in Vietnam between 1967 and 1970. Some sources state that around 1993 it was converted to a QUH-1M drone, but within a few years of that it was registered N703TF to Texas Firebirds. Moved into the Armament museum in December 1999

Painted to represent AC-47D 43-49010 which flew "Spooky" gunship missions from Udorn RTAFB with the 4th SOS in the late 1960s during the Vietnam War, this is really a C-47K allocated serial 44-76486. That aircraft was delivered directly to the USN as R3D-7 BuNo 39103 in March 1945, becoming a TC-47B in 1962. In 1965 it was transferred to the US Army as an NC-47D, retaining 39103 as serial. In 1971 modified to NEC-47H and later same year to C-47K, serving as an electronic test aircraft with an Army detachment at NAS Lakehurst. To Eglin in 1976 and remained. My 1979 photo here

This is actually B-17G 44-83863 painted to represent a 96th BG B-17F, that unit being much later reformed as the 96th Test Wing here at Eglin. B-17F 42-3018 as painted was lost after conversion to an 'Aphrodite' flying bomb launched against U-boat pens in September 1944. The B-17G on show was delivered to the USN as PB-1W BuNo 77231 in 1945 and from 1947 was used in AEW testing by VX-4. Later with VC-11 and VW-1 before civilianisation as N6464D in 1957. Used as a fire tanker in the 1960s, becoming N5233V. Preserved at Eglin from 1975

Painted in the markings of Jimmy Doolittle's Mitchell, this is in fact 44-30854 which was the last B-25 in the USAF inventory and made the final flight of the type when ferried from Turner AFB to Eglin for preservation in May 1960. It is on loan from the National Museum of the USAF, that has its own B-25 painted to represent Doolittle's machine, which ran out of fuel after the famous raid on Tokyo from USS Hornet in April 1942. The Lone Star Flight Museum also has a flying B-25 similarly attired

This is actually F-105D 58-1155, which was first flown in March 1960 and was retained as a test aircraft, initially at Republic's Farmingdale factory airfield on Long Island and also here at Eglin AFB. In 1969 it was assigned to the 23 TFW at McConnell AFB, KS and 1971 was transferred to the 113 TFW (District of Columbia ANG) at Andrews AFB, MD. In 1981 it went on display at the Armament Museum marked as a 388 TFW aircraft based at Korat RTAFB. The actual 59-1771 is preserved at Circleville, OH

This is in fact F-100C 54-1986 which has been marked to represent the aircraft of Major 'Bud' Day, who was awarded a Medal of Honor after being shot down and taken POW in Vietnam while flying a 'Misty' FAC mission in August 1967. Two-seat F-100Fs were used for Misty missions and on that occasion Day was flying 56-3954 of 416 TFS/37 TFW. Whether the preserved F-100C is meant to represent that aircraft or Day, who was previously with 31 TFW, also flew F-100C 54-1954 as shown here is unclear - some coincidence about two 954s if so...

This Sabre was flown in the Korean War but it is not the aircraft of Korean War ace Col. Joseph McConnell as painted. That F-86F was later written off while in Republic of China AF service. This one is in fact 52-5513, transferred to the Republic of Korea AF in 1955. By 1978 it was back in the US and on display at Eglin. My photo here shows the aircraft as it was in 1979. Another Sabre, an ex-Greek AF Canadair-built example, is painted in the same markings and can been seen in their museum at Tatoi
